Ubuntu: Enable and Disable Root password

Ubuntu for reasons of "security" by default allows you to have administrator privileges on the system or, more commonly called root with sudo.

The reason is that with sudo allows for Log on as administrator or root only in the specified command and remained in user mode. Personally, this choice does not agree at all as simply giving sudo -s to have root privileges and then "security" so sought after by turning off the root end is useless.

If we have several operations to be performed from the terminal as a system administrator or use sudo for each command as root or we lodge with the command sudo -s.
In this guide we will see how enable the root account and use the command so loved About (as to 99% of the Linux distributions) to obtain administrative privileges and how to disable it to restore the distribution as default.

Get the root account on Ubuntu is simple enough from a terminal type:
sudo passwd root
We will ask the user password and then enter the new password for roowhere t is advisable that different than you (if we are afraid to forget we can still use the same).
Once you enter the root password and reinserted to confirm we can access with the command on for obtaining administrative privileges. However, we can still use the command without any sudo problems.

For disable the root account and restore as default always just type in terminal:
sudo passwd -l root
and we disabled the root account.

Ubuntu: When you make mistakes to type the password the terminal insults us! Here's how ...

Although not much loved the end is definitely the best way to manage better and faster our Linux Distribution. With the terminal can do everything from installation, removal and application search feature from the most unexpected Browser, The audio player, the email client to even the creation of films about.
Many commands can be used only by root in this case we need to access or adding sudo beginning of the command or by logging in to your administrator through the su command. Once entered, the command will be asked to enter your password and sometimes it can happen to make mistakes as you type, in this case the terminal will show us the error and ask us to re-enter the password.

The developers have decided to add a feature to the command sudo inserendor function called "insults" or "Intelligent insults" which in the case of incorrect entry of the password instead of the normal wording of a sentence appear insult.

Activate the function "insults" on Ubuntu is very simple, just start the terminal and type:
sudo gedit /etc/sudoers
and add
Defaults insults
save and now try to type eg sudo -s and typing the password wrong and here comes the insult from our terminal.

Ubuntu 11.10: how to move the Unity launcher at the bottom of the screen

It is rumored for some time the possibility of make the movable launcher Unity on each side of the screen, but in the meantime that Canonical makes it all official, someone has managed to create a plugin for Compiz that will move the launcher at the bottom of my screen Unity. First, precise This procedure is valid and working only with Unity 3D but can be configured exactly as it is usually configured when Unity is on the left, supporting the autohide property as well and so on.

One of the things that will change after you have made this "hack" is the position of the lens: Will be placed high above the dash.

But there are some bugs:
  • If the Dash is not maximized, you have a problem and aesthetic graphics. So you are "forced" to use maximized if you do not want to have problems.
  • If you use the smaller icons, you'll notice a space between the screen and the launcher. In this case you can solve everything by restarting Unity or the current session.
  • You can not drag icons from the launcher Dash. However, it is still possible to pin applications running from the dash.
Move the launcher of Unity at the bottom

Let us now see how to make the procedure for moving the bottom of the launcher.

Please note: only works on 32 bit systems for the moment!
sudo apt-get install lzma
  • Extract the archive in your home directory should create a folder named "unityshell“
  • From the terminal the following commands:
mkdir -p ~/.compiz-1/plugins
cd ~/unityshell
cp libunityshell.so ~/.compiz-1/plugins/
mkdir /tmp/unityshell
cp *.png /tmp/unityshell/
cd /tmp/unityshell/
chmod 644 *.png
sudo chown root:root *.png
sudo cp *.png /usr/share/unity/4/
  • Leave and come back from the current session and enjoy the launcher moved down.
Restoring Unity to the left of the screen

If you tire of Unity in the bottom of your screen, you can restore everything by typing:
rm ~/.compiz-1/plugins/libunityshell.so

Xubuntu too slow? here's how to speed it up

The move to Gnome 3 and Unity has meant that many users found out the other Linux desktop environments, such as Xfce The default desktop environment of Xubuntu light and at the same time complete
Xubuntu / Xfce allow to have an environment very similar to the good old desktop Gnome 2 In fact we can customize the panels, add new widgets on them and other features that make it extremely versatile, while requiring very few resources.

Also used by users who have dated a PC or with scarce resources is an excellent alternative to Gnome Shell / Unity projects still very "young" with few customizations and above require significantly more resources.
Some readers have reported that notice Xubuntu just slightly especially if you have few resources available, the problem is due to the gestore window which is activated by display consists of default, which adds some effects to our desktop environment such as transparency of the panel, the shadows of the windows, etc.

Unfortunately, the composer brings you some nice effects, but if our PC is dated or scarce resources will notice a slight slow when using it.

However, we can simply disable this feature by going to Menu -> Settings -> Manager Settings and click on Adjustments of the window manager you start going out the window tab Composer and uncheck Enables the display composite.

Now we will have no effect, but our desktop will be much faster.

Install Ubuntu on a Mac! here's how

Ubuntu is certainly Linux Distribution world's most popular and there are many users who come every day to test it, or better yet install it on your PC. Peculiarities of Ubuntu and many other Linux distributions is also to be able to test without having to install. We can also install Ubuntu even on a PC with another operating system already exists for example if we Windows 7 installed in our PC we can install Ubuntu during installation in which we will show the disk space for the new operating system Linux, Resize the partition where you installed Windows (Without erasing any data) and create a partition where Ubuntu will be installed.
The problem comes if our PC is a iMac, MacBook, Mac Mini and Mac Pro which as we all know can only install Mac OSX operating system.

Here's how install Ubuntu on a Mac.

To install Ubuntu on the MacBook, iMac so we can use rEFIt a Free boot menu which allows us to access to install and boot on other Operating Systems. Operation is very simple bootstrap your Mac OSX and install rEFIt downloading the file .dmg by this page ,Once installed, we create our partition where to install Ubuntu to do this we use the tools Disk Utility from there we create a new partition.

At this point we insert the disk Ubuntu and restart our Mac.
When you restart holding down the button C to start the boot from the CD/DVD and click on Install. Let us note that if we use a MacBook must create a partition Swap otherwise we can not use the "hibernation" And complete the installation. When you restart the dual boot system where we will access Mac OSX or Ubuntu.

The guide is still valid for any other Linux Distribution.

Unity 2D: The Launcher always visible. Here's how ...

The new Ubuntu 11.10 Oniric proposes the new default desktop environment Unity which, however, only the latest generation of graphics cards and then if our PC is dated not be able to use the new desktop environment. Canonical he also thought of making this Unity2D the desktop environment similar in many respects to the default version, however, written in QT and compatible with any graphics card. Although similar in many features and appearance Unity2D offers no customization tools feature is not much loved by many users.
One of the most popular customization is the ability to disable the disappearance of Intelligent Launcher enabled by default, simply put the function that gets rid of the sidebar, or Launcher when we approach them with a window so increasing the available workspace.

In this article we will see how to disable this feature always visible and keep the Launcher bringing the windows below the toolbar.

To get the Launcher always visible on Unity 2D you must install Dconf a tool for customizing the desktop environment to do our terminal just type:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
at this point to have the Launcher always visible just type:
dconf write /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/use-strut true
if instead riprositinare want the Launcher as the default we type in terminal
dconf write /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/use-strut 0
in case of problems or more information, please report it by simply commenting on this article

Skype on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric 64 Bit does not work! Here's how to solve the problem

A lot of the applications used by users Linux is Skype the famous application with which we can call anywhere in the world for free or very cheap rates through Voip technology.
We have received several reports indicating that Skype was not present in version 64bit the repository Canonical Partner 11.10  Oneiric (For 32bit it is present) and those who installed the package for the previous release was the error libXss.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

The problemhas been reported toalready several weeks we hope to be resolved as soon as possible, while we can still install Skype version 64bit for Natty installing some packages for 32bit after installation. Here's how:

If you still need to install Skype for 64bit enough that you start the terminal and type;

wget http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/s/skype/skype_2.2.0.35-0natty1_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

sudo apt-get install -f
Always at this point from the terminal type:
echo foreign-architecture i386 | sudo tee /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch

sudo apt-get install libxss1:i386 libqtcore4:i386 libqt4-dbus:i386

sudo apt-get install libqtgui4:i386
and we will have our Skype on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric 64 Bit fully functional.

Update Ubuntu or Debian Offline without any application, here's how ..

We have spoken several times of problem of broadband ,Unfortunately are still many users to be forced to navigate to 56kb speed in 2012 seems to really another world, and unfortunately for some people it becomes a real problem.

In fact the main Linux distributions release daily updates improve the stability and security the operating system and theni is advisable to keep constantly updated its distribution. updates often require downloading several mb download packages, and as we said if we have a slow connection is a lot of the time required. If you have a friend with a fast connection we download packages through its connection and once scaricatinstall the operating system in our all without even using any application, Here's how.

In this guide we will create a script with all the links to download packages to update our Distribution included are not the official repositories but also other PPA to install and update Minitube, Java etc., the Google repository for our browser, Google Earth and so on. Once we realized the script to download packages or other Linux distribution or on Mac or Windows all with ease. Once downloaded simply save them on a pendrive and take them to the PC with a command to update and upgrade,

Here's how:

First we create the script with links to download packages colleghiamoci internet to do with our distribution with the slow connection and start the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get -qq --print-uris dist-upgrade > uris

sudo awk '{print "wget -O " $2 " " $1}' < uris > ~/wget-script
At this point we called the script wget-script in our home that contains the list of upgraded packages just save it on a pendrive and go from our friend with a fast connection.

If our friend use Linux create a folder in your home directory and rename it for example packages and inside we copy the script named wget-script from the terminal and type:
cd ~/pacchetti

sh -x ./wget-script
the script will automatically download all the packages in the Packages folder. After we copy the folder in our Flash Drive ,We thank our friend and we can go home to upgrade.

If our friend is using Microsotft Windows or Mac OSX I have no problem just Firefox with the plugin DownThemAll (If he had not just install it). Create a new folder on the home PC of our friend and we start https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/downthemall/ within the browser and drag the script wget-script will open a window with all of our packages link on this just right-click contextual menu type of DownThemAll filtering options and faster .deb destination folder and the folder you created earlier. Click on Start and here is the downloads of our packages. After we copy a folder in our Flash Drive ,We thank our friend and we can go home to upgrade.

Once back home we copy the folder packages in our pendrive home of our distribution and start the terminal and type:

sudo apt-get -o dir::cache::archives="~/pacchetti" dist-upgrade
if by mistake we
sudo apt-get -o dir::cache::archives="/home/username/pacchetti" dist-upgrade
where instead of our user insert username.

At the end we will have our Distribution completely updated.

Customize the Gnome Shell and make it similar to Gnome 2 with a simple extension, that's how ...

The arrival of Gnome 3 has also brought a new interface called Gnome Shell which allows a new user experience, the team tried to semplificare desktop environment trying to create a single space dedicated to the management called Activity.
Gnome Shell unlike Gnome 2 default offers very few customizations ,The user can still install dedicated extensions which allow us to add new features to the new desktop environment.
If we want to add a new menu integrated in the panel, A bar with the list of active windowsat the bottom of the desk, ourand favorite applications on the panel etc. We can do it through a single extension called GNOME Shell Frippery.

GNOME Shell Frippery is a simple Gnome Shell Extension which allows us to customizing our new desktop environment for example by adding a menu in the panel which will allow us to directly access all of our applications installed without seeking the Dash.

Also GNOME Shell Frippery also adds the ability to add the bottom panel with the 'list of active windows and sElector of workspaces (By clicking with the right mouse button on it we can add or remove new work spaces). GNOME Shell Frippery also allows you to add our favorite applications in the panel and move the clock on the right panel as Gnome 2 ,Also allows you to replace the pause button in our user menu (the top right) with Shutdown and Restart.

GNOME Shell Frippery is available in 2 versions one for the new Gnome Shell 3.2 and the other for older versions remember that before you install the extension must be installed Gnome Tweak Tools.

To install GNOME Shell Frippery on Gnome 3.2 (Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric, Fedora 16, openSUSE 12.1, Arch Linux, Etc.) just install the package curl and start the terminal and type:

curl http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/gnome-shell-frippery-0.3.0.tgz | tar -xz
To install GNOME Shell Frippery on Gnome 3 (Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15, etc.) Simply install the package curl and start the terminal and type:

curl http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/gnome-shell-frippery-0.2.5.tgz | tar -xz
at this point restart Gnome Shell or restarting or ending the session or simply by typing ALT + F2 and insert r and press sending.

When you restart Gnome Shell we start Gnome Tweak Tools and card Shell Extensions select the new extensions.

AppMenu on Xubuntu 11.10, here's how

In these latest releases Canonical has focused heavily on improving the work space inprimis removing the bottom panel and bringing the application menu in the panel this feature is also referred to as AppMenu (Or Global Menu). The AppMenu for some users is very useful especially if you use a laptop or tablet or if you use applications where the menu is not required in the operations.
As we have seen in recent weeks we can turn this feature also Kubuntu.

Now we can use the 'AppMenu or Global Menu also on Xubuntu 11.10, With whom we have a new Widgets known precisely AppMenu Plugins which, once integrated into our panel will be added to the menu of applications launched.

Here's how to activate 'AppMenu or globalmenu on Xubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.

For activate or AppMenu globalmenu on Xubuntu 11.10 Oneiric simply launch the terminal and type:

Download the necessary dependencies:
sudo apt-get install indicator-appmenu appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt appmenu-gtk3
if we turn AppMenu on Firefox and Thunderbird we also install:
sudo apt-get install firefox-globalmenu thunderbird-globalmenu
If we Xubuntu 11.10 32bit
wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/964512/misc/xfce4-appmenu-plugin_0.10-1_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i xfce4-appmenu-plugin_0.10-1_i386.deb

sudo apt-get install -f
If we Xubuntu 11.10 64bit
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/964512/misc/xfce4-appmenu-plugin_0.10-1_i386.deb

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric: problems with ATI graphics cards? Here's how to solve them

The new Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric brings with it many new features, among them the final step in Gnome 3 which brings with it many benefits for both performance and stability of the problem is that the project is still "young" and then again with a lot of incompatibilities and the lack of many customization tools.

In fact Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric allows you to easily install Gnome Shell and Gnome Classic ,the new interface proposed the Gnome team which, however, brings many problems with users with ATI graphics cards.
Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric allows the installation of proprietary drivers ATI Catalyst 11.7 which lead to problems overheating and power management and incompatibility with the new Gnome Shell.

How to solve this problem?

which we indicated that updating the drivers to the new version 11.9 everything works perfectly including Gnome Shell.
Here's how install new ATI Catalyst 11.9 on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric

Install the new drivers ATI Catalyst 11.9 on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric is very simple to prepare our first distribution of the new installation or upgrade Drivers to do so we start the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++6 dkms libqtgui4 wget execstack libelfg0 dh-modaliases
If we Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric 64Bit you must also ia32-libs to do so from a terminal type:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Now we can install ATI Catalyst 11.9 Driver on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric always terminal, type

mkdir catalyst && cd catalyst

wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-9-x86.x86_64.run

sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-9-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/oneiric

sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb

sudo aticonfig --initial -f
and restart at the end we will have our new ATI Catalyst 11.9 Driver installed.

Ubuntu 11.10: Problems with the boot loader? Here's how to solve ...

The new Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric surely brings significant improvements compared to the previous 11.04 Natty, Both in the desktop Unity that the Linux Kernel with the arrival of the new version 3.x.
However, a problem that was already present on the previous version, and unfortunately still present (and in this case also concerns me) is the Boot Loader Grub.

For the uninitiated Ubuntu used as Boot Loader Grub that we start the application that allows you to run multiple operating systems on our PCs also can customize it for example by changing the resolution, background, etc. Default Operating System.

Many users report issues with the new Grub of Ubuntu In fact we will find the written startup error because the monitor incorrect resolution This prevents the display and then the choice of which operating system to boot. We can either wait 10 seconds or press enter to start
Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric even if this prevents us from launching other distributions in our PC.

How can we solve this problem?

Solving this problem is easy, simply enter the correct resolution of our Grub to do this very easily we can use a simple application called StartUp-Manager.

StartUp-Manager is a simple application with which we can configure our Boot Loader Grub easily between the different configurations we can also adjust the resolution.

Install StartUp-Manager is very simple since it is down there, in the default repositories of Ubuntu, is simply a to install Ubuntu Software Center or from a terminal type:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
Once installed start it (you will be prompted for the password to start it) and on the first tab called Boot Options on Screen we can set the correct resolution, the board also enter the same resolution also on board Advanced -> Resolution of the bootloader menu close and restart.

On the restart we will have our Boot Loader Grub clearly visible.

Problems with LightDm on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric? Here's how to solve

The new Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric is bringing many problems for many users, the best known are the file manager Nautilus that closes for no reason, the Grub bootloader is not visible and 'inability to install deb packages with Ubuntu Software Center and now there's also problems with new Desktop Manager LightDm.

The new LightDm in my opinion is an example of the new release Ubuntu ie a new project beautiful to look at how unstable, In fact, many users report the inability to enter the password when you log on ending the session, Display Problems and even some blocks during startup of Gnome Shell and Gnome Classic blocking the OS to the point that we must proceed with the much "loved" reset button of our PC.

How to solve this problem?
If we do not want to wait for the team Canonical solve problems LightDm the only thing to do is change Desktop Manager the is more suitable GDM stabilissimo but not customizable (and who cares!) created their own team Gnome and default on Ubuntu up to 11.10.

Install GDM and set it as Desktop Manager default of Ubuntu 11.10 is very simple, simply start the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install gdm
and confirm.

During the installation will appear in our terminal with a screen that will show us to confirm the inclusion of our new Desktop Manager and set the default to do this we select the first screen by clicking OK on the Tab key and press Enter.

Now we will be asked to indicate which Desktop Manager to use (Image below) with the arrow keys to choose gdm and click on Sending.

At the end we will have to restart our new Desktop Manager GDM fully functional and stable.

If we are to regain LightDM as the default Desktop Manager Just launch a terminal and type;
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
and choose LightDM.

WifiKill: find out who uses wireless and disconnect it! [Android]

Have you always had the desire to hunt out some WiFi devices connected because you ate too much bandwidth and you were surfing the net with difficulty? With WiFiKill now you can do one of the most vile (and fun) that a person who uses the Internet may be subject to: kicked out of the WiFi network! Normally, this is something that is handled through a PC with administrator rights for the Wi-Fi router, but WiFiKill, is here to give you this control.
WiFiKill only works on devices with root permissions enabled!
The application is actually much simpler than you might think. Once installed, you will have the top button OFF that, if touched, will become ON and start scanning devices. The funny thing is that when you drive out a device from the WiFi network, it will not know: on his device will continue to be reported to the active connection but browsing seems so slow enough to have stuck!

If you want to hunt all, press the button ALL which is located on the upper side by the ON/OFF. The application is still young and also has some little option but I'm sure that, over time, become a must-have very complete and appreciated by all Android users.

Start Ubuntu 11.10 automatically with Gnome Shell

Here Good tip and I is very useful because they are already several people have asked me how to start Gnome Shell automatically as always that restart the desktop is displayedby default is Unity and have to manually select Gnome-Shell from LightDM.

The command to execute is:
sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s gnome-shell
And if we want to reuse the default Unity:
sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu

Install Gnome Shell (and the classic Gnome desktop) in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

If we switch back to the classic desktop instead of Gnome or Gnome Shell want to use first thing we have to do is install Gnome Shell from the repositories of Ubuntu 11.10. To do this run:
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
or Open the Ubuntu Software Center, from the launcher side of Unity and search for the string "Gnome Shell", select the corresponding entry and press the button "Install"

Certainly so in this way I discovered by accident that you also can download the Full Circle Magazine magazines from the Ubuntu software center (good point).

Once installed and Gnome Shell and we restart the session and from LightDM we can select the desktop you want to log in: Gnome (Shell), Gnome classic or Unity, according to which we have installed.

Ubuntu 11.10: no screensaver? Here's how to install and enable

One of the "newness" of Ubuntu 11.10, I was just passing, concerns screensaver. I do not know if you noticed, but if you leave your PC idle for a while ', will return only the black screen with no screensaver set! The nice thing is that, by default, you will not find any screensaver installed on your Ubuntu Oneiric! So how to solve? Simply install the package but removing xscreensaver to gnome-screensaver.

The first thing to do is open the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver
Now install the new package:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-data-extra
XScreenSaver is a collection of more than 200 screensavers operator for systems with X11, Unix-like but also for Mac OS. Now we have to make the screen saver also active at startup of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric and to do so, open the dash and look for Unity "Applications boot". Now click on "Add" And added:
Name: Screensaver
Command: xscreensaver -splash

Now you just need to choose your favorite screensavers! Open the Dash and run XScreenSaver: You are in front of more than 200 alternatives really nice and well done! It 's all.

Ubuntu 11.10: how to change the Mouse cursor theme

I'm not a fan of customizing my Ubuntu to change the appearance of the mouse pointer But just a few minutes ago, talking with someone I had the idea that the world there are many people who want to understand how you can instead install a nice theme for your cursor. One of the flaws, unfortunately, Ubuntu 11.10 is that it is a little 'more elaborate cosmetic change these aspects of the entire environment but, with a little 'patience and some terminal commands, you can customize everything.

The first thing to do (if you do not already have it) is install Gnome Tweak Tools: You can find inside of 'Ubuntu Software Centre. The second thing to do, however, is arrange for a theme for the mouse. Open the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install oxygen-cursor-theme oxygen-cursor-theme-extra
In this example, I did install the Oxygen theme that, in my opinion, is very nice. Now run Gnome Tweak Tools and card Theme -> Cursor Theme selected the theme Oxygen just installed. To apply you just have to restart compiz by pressing ALT+F2 and typing:
compiz --replace
And the new theme for your pointer will be set immediately! If you want there is also a video that explains step by step installation and configuration.

Change the new Ubuntu startup screen with Simple LightDM Manager

A new feature that brings Ubuntu is the emergence of a new login system called LightDM. It was a change which I think is necessary especially if Canonical wants to show a maturity in the the graphical interface.

Unfortunately these changes necessarily imply search options to configure them graphically. And we already have it thanks to Simple LighDM Manager, an application allows us to change the background of the login screen.

To install open a terminal and type
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:claudiocn/slm
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simple-lightdm-manager
Once installed, you can access it from the Dash writing LightDM Manager:

At the moment there is little that can be done, but this is more than enough for now. You can set the wallpaper and logo welcome. Probably more will be added to future options, and that is appreciated.

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric: Remove Unity and use Gnome Classic by Default

In recent weeks we have seen that many users like the new idea of a desktop environment proposed by Canonical with Unity and Gnome with the new Gnome Shell.
The focus of Gnome and Canonical on trying to bring in more desktop workspace trying to prepare for the imminent arrival of the tablet has pissed many users of these also patron of Mr. Linus Torvalds, Linux Kernel who opted for other desktop environments.
Who installed the new Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric unfortunately will no longer have the ability to have the much-loved Gnome 2 / Ubuntu Classic finally abandoned with the arrival of Gnome 3 but we can choose Gnome Shell and how Fallback also called Gnome Classic.

Gnome Classic has an environment similar to the desktop Gnome 2 which allows us to personalize it and get back the much-loved Gnome 2 of Oneiric.

Here's how ...

Step 0:
We update the package manager
sudo apt-get update
Step 1:
Please install gnome classic
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
Log out
Login to push the little button with the gear, choose Gnome Classic, And enter the password you entered in the mode 'fallback

Remove Truzzi of ubuntu.

Step 2:
Replace lightdm with gdm. I do not know why they put lightdm, but gave me problems so I put gdm which is becoming a rock
sudo apt-get install gdm
When the menu appears with the choice of which to use (gdm or lightdm) inserted gdm.
sudo apt-get purge lightdm
Reboot and verify that the login screen is one of gdm (that is different from before). Make sure that Gnome Classic is selected.

Step 3 (optional):
Install aptitude (and 'using the apt-get in Debian), gdebi (to install. Deb without opening the software center stone) and synaptic
sudo apt-get install aptitude gdebi synaptic
The syntax of aptitude and 'identical to that of apt-get/apt-cache. I recommend that you use aptitude to the search function, which also shows if the packages are already 'installed (but only in name and not look in the description), apt-get for the rest.

Step 4:
Remove the appmenu. The appmenu (or Global Menubar) is that function that brings up the menu 'panel. Since we are going to remove unity, becomes useless (and also a problem because there would appear under the menu panel nautilus gnome)
sudo apt-get purge appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt indicator-appmenu
Step 5:
Remove unity (NO pleased)
sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-music unity-lens-applications unity-greeter unity-common unity-asset-pool unity-2d-launcher unity-2d libunity-misc4 libunity-2d-private0 gir1.2-unity-4.0
Removing unity we will install 'gnome-shell, you'll find it as an option to login with the gnome-classic. If you want to check it out, but I find unity resembling a thread better although I prefer the classic

Step 6:
Remove the overlay scrollbar (scrollbar invisible and unusable incliccabile which replaced the stantard. Maybe I put too many adjectives) and restore the standard, more 'functional.
This step 'option, if you want to hurt you with that crap, or a touchpad mutlitouch configured and running at the apple, then skip this step
sudo apt-get purge liboverlay-scrollbar-0.2-0 liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0 overlay-scrollbar appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt indicator-appmenu
Step 7:
Remove compiz that was no good to me, I prefer to use xcompmgr, more 'lighter and less dramatic, but these are tastes,
If you like compiz but let it go you need to run the command compiz - replace and put nell'autostart (Applications -> Other -> Boot Options or gnome-session-properties from terminal, and insert a new entry with the command )
sudo apt-get remove compiz compiz-plugins-main-default libcompizconfig0
Step 8:
Replace the buttons on the right window (optional, recommended for those who also uses windows to not go crazy).
Install gconf-editor
sudo apt-get install gconf-editor
run gconf-editor in terminal
Navigate the tree on the left of /apps/metacity/general
Look to the right voice and change the string button_layout existing ":minimize, maximize, close" (without quotes)

Make a logout-login (or reboot if you are convinced windowsiani) and if it explodes the PC you're done

Install the flash
Make sure you have enabled the "Software Sources" the repository partners "
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install adobe-flushplugin

Ubuntu 11.10 does not allow us to install a deb package for Ubuntu Software Center! Here's how to solve

In these early days of issuance of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric several reports are coming in to some problems in the new release of riscontranti Canonical. In addition to the problem of Grub and Nautilus came also a problem of Market Ubuntu Software Center which does not allow us to install a deb package.
In fact, if for example we want to install Google Chrome, Google Earth, Skype, Work and other applications with their own release. deb package will appear in our Ubuntu Software Center an error message similar to the one above.

Solves the problem is very simple since for luck on Ubuntu there are other ways to install a package. deb in our distributions, so here's 2 alternatives for deb packages to install the new Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.

The first method is to use Gdebi the tool to install deb packages in our distribution (the default before the arrival of Ubuntu Software Center).
Install Gdebi is very simple we can do or through Ubuntu Software Center or from the terminal by typing
sudo apt-get install gdebi
Once installed just go on the deb package and right click on Open with Package Installer Gdebi, Which will open a window in addition to the package we will find the Install button, and confirm after we installed our package.

Unfortunately, Gdebi in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric can also make mistakes (never happened for 10 years now with the use 11.10 Oneiric even this does not work properly) as shown in the image below.

Now to install our package will use the terminal with the command dpkg just copy or move the package into the home and start a terminal and type:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

sudo apt-get install -f
at the end we will have our package installed on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric

My hope is that at least the next release will come back as the early versions of Ubuntu where it was thought to stability in the distribution and appearance.

The Faenza icons 1.1 disembarking on Ubuntu 11.10! Here's how to install

Also Oneiric, As well as previous versions of Ubuntu, Is a highly configurable, allowing you to install additional packages of icons to decorate the entire room. But you will notice that, unlike previous releases, Ubuntu 11.10 is a bit 'more complicated configuration process because you will need to install Gnome Tweak Tool for this type of transaction can be finalized.

We proceed by degrees and calm. First Faenza icons sets are one the most beloved and successful for Ubuntu and have been updated to version 1.1: a version fully compatible with Ubuntu 11.10. You can install them on your Gnome 3 or Unity interchangeably, the setup process is the same.

The set 1.1 in Faenza Icons introduces new icons for programs such as Clementine, Xterm, Wunderlist, Scribes, Steam, Tracker, Gparted, GConf Editor and to improve integration with the system, were also included in two packages: Faenza-Ambiance and Faenza-Radiance.

Google Chrome on Ubuntu 11.10 will not install? Here's how to solve

I have always been a fan and avid supporter of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome would not change even if, I must admit, I also have the browser from Google installed on my Ubuntu 11.10. The problem is that, in this version of the operating system at home Canonical ,install Google Chrome was a bit 'more difficult than usual because of an error that I was returned from Ubuntu Software Centre during the installation process.

The bug is simple but annoying: you can not install Google Chrome in 32 or 64-bit on Ubuntu 11.10 by simply downloading the deb package from the official site. When you open the file with Ubuntu Software Centre, the error you get is the following:
Internal Error
"The file google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb can not be opened."
Fortunately the solution is very simple. Open the terminal and you have to move the folder containing the file. Deb that you downloaded Google Chrome. In my case I typed:
sudo dpkg -i ~/Scrivania/google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb
Enter your password and proceed with the installation. Now Google Chrome will not install but the terminal will return an error. No fear, you have to install Chrome finally type:
sudo apt-get install -f
And finally you can also enjoy the Google browser on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric

Enable horizontal scrolling with two fingers on touchpad and disable while typing in Lubuntu (solved)

I leave the solution as I struggled to find it, if it serves a community partner.

type in terminal:
sudo leafpad /etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart
adding at the end these two lines:
@synclient HorizTwoFingerScroll=1
@syndaemon -i1 -d
save and exit.
The first line was to activate the horizontal scroll with two fingers, the second to disable the touchpad while typing.

I hope it is useful

A greeting
