Available Wine 4.0! Support for Vulkan and Direct3D 12, CSMT is enabled by default

After being in development for a year Wine 4.0 is now officially available. The new stable release includes important news such as support for Vulkan, Direct3D 12 and joypads.
For those who do not know Wine is a software written in C that allows the operation of the programs developed for the Microsoft Windows operating system on Linux . Wine is also used by Proton , the layer developed by Valve for Steam Play.

The changes introduced with this major release are many. Support for Direct3D 12 is still experimental. Clearly, the vkd3d library and a Vulkan compatible graphics card are required for Direct3D 12. As for Vulkan, instead, a complete driver has been implemented.

The Multi-Threaded Command Stream (CSMT) is enabled by default, it should provide better graphics side performance . New features have been implemented for Direct3D 10 and 11 and the OpenGL core contexts are now enabled for all graphics cards and for all versions of Direct3D below 12.

Several Direct3D 11 interfaces have been updated to version 11.2 and as many DXGI interfaces have been updated to version 1.6. This allows all applications that require these new interfaces to function properly.

Support for 3D S3TC tablet textures has been introduced . S3TC-compressed 2D textures were already supported. HID game controllers are now supported in the XInput and Raw Input APIs. An SDL driver was then implemented to make the SDL pads compatible with the HID interface. Last but not least: first support for HiDPI on Android.

KDE neon: Ubuntu LTS and the latest KDE combined perfectly

KDE neon is a distribution (to simplify, we will treat it as such ) that, although it did not have the best of the starts, has ended up becoming one of the most prominent within the GNU/Linux spectrum, which has been clear in our survey to choose the most popular distribution of 2018 , being the first among the distributions that have KDE as the main desktop environment.

It is true that in our survey we put Kubuntu as part of Ubuntu, that Debian offers freedom of choice, although keeping GNOME as a reference, and that with Manjaro something similar to Debian happens, but with the difference that it offers separate installation facilities for each environment and with XFCE as a reference. The three distributions have good implementations of Plasma 5, so it is expected that a significant percentage of its users use it. However, it is important that KDE neon has outperformed openSUSE , which could be considered as the great reference among those who use KDE by default (also offering a good experience with GNOME and XFCE).

Plasma 5 vanilla and Ubuntu LTS: guaranteed support, power and optimization
At this point it is not necessary to describe the more than recognized virtues of Plasma 5: "power", almost infinite possibilities of personalization, versatile, supreme optimization level, with a friendly default arrangement (Windows) ... KDE neon is a product KDE community officer , so by default we find a totally vanilla experience  of the environment, with Breeze as the theme.

But the KDE Project is much more than an environment, it also covers many applications that are among the best within its category in GNU/Linux, or at least among those that are free software. Here we find the powerful digiKam photo manager , the Dolphin file browser and the Okular document reader, however, possibly the most outstanding are Krita and Kdenlive, not because they are qualitatively better, but because neon offers much more versions. updated, refined and functional than Kubuntu (something that from the member of the Ubuntu family is not corrected even with the well-known PPA Kubuntu Backports). This shows KDE neon as a great option to have Plasma 5 in its latest version and to be able to enjoy the most recent versions of KDE applications.

After superficially explaining what KDE neon offers at the software level (KDE and much KDE in the latest version and vanilla experience ), we can not forget about the other big leg that supports this operating system: Ubuntu LTS. Relying on the long support versions of Ubuntu provides enough stability for use in production environments , ideal for such as development with Ruby on Rails and any programming environment. The update and constant improvement of applications like Krita and Kdenlive contribute in a positive way in this sense. In addition, it benefits from all third-party support available for Ubuntu, offering great compatibility with the applications available for GNU / Linux. Here you can add the multimedia support in Opera and Vivaldi, beyond the trite Google Chrome and Steam.

KDE-neon-768x432 (1)

We find Snap installed and enabled by default , so from Discover you can get the applications supplied in this form from the official Canonical store. In addition to Spotify, Discord, Skype and Slack, we also find powerful applications focused on professional environments, such as Android Studio and RubyMine. Beyond the technical discussions around the packages without traditional dependencies, having all this software available with just two clicks is very convenient.

KDE Neon is an operating system without additives (or without many additives), so at first it hardly consumes resources. This opens the door to being able to be installed in relatively modest computers, to the extent that the question to choose between Plasma 5 and XFCE at present is not in the power of the CPU and/or the amount of RAM, but in the power of the GPU. And in spite of everything, it is not that at the graphics level I ask for something especially powerful, since my old Toshiba laptop, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600 with 256 megabytes of shared memory, is able to offer an experience that borders on perfection, just showing failures when a window is resized (something that has happened to me with Unity 7 and GNOME Shell in the same graph), although luckily the graphics level faults go when the window is released, so there is nothing serious to highlight.

It is true that Plasma 5 can be reconfigured so as not to depend on hardware acceleration, however, it is obvious that it is an environment for, at least in its predetermined disposition, to take advantage of that feature that is not well implemented (or not offered). enough power) in certain graphics when using Linux with them.

What does not shine so much of KDE neon
Like all human creation, KDE neon has its faults. Being more specific, it has a series of shortcomings that, although they do not prevent it from becoming a first-level operating system, do make its experience seem incomplete for some users:

  • The lack of a graphic assistant for third-party drivers: Although this is not necessary because I use an AMD GPU and Ubuntu installs by default the micro codes of Intel and AMD as a mitigation measure against Specter , the truth is that NVIDIA users and Broadcom Wi-Fi may be missing some graphical wizard that will help them run their hardware with fewer steps. Kubuntu does have this assistant, so maybe it can be installed.
  • The lack of a graphic assistant to install PPA: Another graphic assistant that is missing. Linux Mint has an explicit graphical tool to add PPA repositories, while Ubuntu offers an implicit way through "Software and updates", only needing to copy and paste the code "ppa: autorppa/nombreppa" in the field "APT line: "When you want to add a new repository to the system.
  • A system not suitable for NVIDIA users ?: Mixing Plasma 5 and NVIDIA may end up giving unsatisfactory results, either due to bugs or performance issues . Here we are not going to blame the KDE community, but the GPU manufacturer for offering quite questionable drivers in terms of compliance with the standards set in GNU/Linux.
  • Constant changes in the set of Qt and KDE may end up breaking compatibility and software applications provided by the official Ubuntu repository. Those who want more reliability and stability in this regard can turn to Kubuntu. In spite of everything, the catalog of software of KDE has the necessary quality and is the sufficiently varied like to mitigate this inconvenience.
  • How about a virtual keyboard emoji?: Yes, this is not a vital feature, but the emoji are increasingly used, so the inclusion of something natively by the KDE community would be very Thank you

Combining the updated KDE software package and Ubuntu LTS would have to result in one of the best operating systems in the world, and yes, KDE neon fulfills and honors that recognition without a doubt.

We are facing a product that is nourished and to a large extent takes advantage of almost all the virtues offered by its two great props, resulting in an operating system with enormous possibilities that can also work correctly on a wide variety of hardware. Of course, as long as the CPU is 64-bit, architecture that has been the standard for more than a decade in the x86 instruction set.

Those who seek the best of KDE on a stable basis and good support from third parties have a great choice in KDE neon. Undoubtedly, this is another case of make Linux great again .

Available Debian 9.7 with the vulnerability patch in APT

The launch of a new maintenance update for the stable Debian branch: Debian 9.7 has just been announced , whose main motivation is given by the recently patched vulnerability found in APT.

It was at the end of last week when a critical flaw was unveiled in the APT package manager , which would allow remote code execution, facilitating man-in-the-middle attacks and a consequent escalation of privileges with the that infect the system at administrator level.

But calm, because as it became known, Debian, Ubuntu and the rest of affected distributions released the patch of rigor , so to keep the system conveniently updated -first basic recommendation for any operating system- there are no more problems.

That is to say, Debian has "taken advantage" of the event to refresh its installation image, but all the Debian versions in course, as well as those of Ubuntu and derived distributions have published the patch, it is worth repeating; that is, as always, this launch is only aimed at new installations .

Otherwise, this version includes Linux kernel 4.9 LTS or GNOME desktop environments 3.22, KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS, Cinnamon 3.2, MATE 1.16, Xfce 4.12 and LXDE, along with the rest of the news that brought Debian 9 'Stretch' .

There's no more. Debian 9.7 can be downloaded through replicas around the world.

Meanwhile, Debian 10 continues its development with a view to arriving this year.

KDE Plasma 5.15 Beta available

The KDE Project announced the KDE Plasma 5.15 beta (Plasma 5.14.90).

After over three months of development, here are the results of the developers' efforts. This release intends to make Plasma more intuitive and simple to use. The devs to achieve this purpose have mainly used the feedback received from the Visual Design Group. The final release is expected for next month (12 February).

KDE Plasma 5.15 Beta

reads in the official announcement.

For Firefox for example it has introduced the ability to use the native dialogs KDE (for opening and saving files).

There are no new amazing features to list but "only" a lot of little news that goes to refine the user experience. The possibility of seeing the remaining battery of bluetooth devices in the Power widget has been introduced , the "Virtual Desktops" page has been renewed with support for Wayland . Present a new theme for Notes , improvements for KRunner and it is now possible to download and install new wallpaper directly from the configuration dialog.

Also Improvement Discover : improves the management of Snap and Flatkpak, the search of the app, repositories, and upgrades. Added a new "Sources" page that replaces "Settings".

Curious to try it? You can download the KDE Plasma 5.15 beta by clicking here.

[GUIDE] Here's how to see the history of packages installed, updated or removed on Ubuntu, Debian or Mint

file-history-696x392 (1).png

In this article we will see how to find out all the packages installed, updated or removed from your system. The guide, which is based on the use of the command line, is valid for Ubuntu , Linux Mint and Debian (and probably for most derivatives).

The goal is to access the history of your system, which is the list of DEB packages you have installed/updated/removed, including the date you did it. To do this on Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint you can read the dpkg.log file (dpkg is the low-level architecture for package management, installation and removal). You find it in the path /var/log/dpkg.log. You can use the command grep to parse the file and then go to view only the removed packages or those installed or updated ones, based on your needs.

This method works for packages DEB whatever way you installed them: graphical tools such as Synaptic, GNOME Software Update Manager, or a command line tool such as apt, apt-get, aptitude or dpkg. But it does not work for other packages like Flatpak or Snap, or for software installed from sources.

Open the terminal and give:
grep "install " /var/log/dpkg.log
This is the result:
$ grep "install " /var/log/dpkg.log
2019-01-08 13:22:15 install automathemely:all <none> 1.3
2019-01-08 13:22:29 install python3-astral:all <none> 1.6.1-1
2019-01-08 13:22:29 install python3-tzlocal:all <none> 1.5.1-1
2019-01-08 13:22:29 install python3-schedule:all <none> 0.3.2-1
2019-01-09 17:19:49 install libwebkit2-sharp-4.0-cil:amd64 <none> 2.10.9+git20160917-1.1
2019-01-09 17:19:49 install sparkleshare:all <none> 3.28-1
2019-01-15 15:58:20 install ffsend:amd64 <none> 0.1.2
Similarly you can give
grep "upgrade " /var/log/dpkg.lo
for a list of updated packages.

grep "remove " /var/log/dpkg.log
for the list of packages removed.

/var/log/dpkg.log contains packages installed, updated and removed for the current month. For the previous month, read the file /var/log/dpkg.log.1

For example, dates:
grep "install " /var/log/dpkg.log.1
Do you want to go further back? Use zgrep in place of grep and read /var/log/dpkg.log.2.gz, /var/log/dpkg.log.3.gz, /var/log/dpkg.log.4.gz and so on.

zgrep "upgrade " /var/log/dpkg.log.2.gz
Alternative roads
There are alternative methods to achieve the same goal but, as they say in my part, "work". For example Synaptic Package Manager (File -> History) can only show you a history of the packages installed, updated, or removed by Synaptic same (and not those updated/installed/removed by apt, apt-get, dpkg, Software Updater, etc). Similarly, the log file /var/log/apt/history.log shows only the actions performed using apt/apt-get.

Akira: budding a new application for UI/UX design

With the implicit support of the elementary project, which with the latest version of the system was formed on an application distribution platform with enough impetus, the start of a crowdfunding campaign is announced with which to promote the development of Akira , a new design application for Linux focused on the creation of user interfaces.

" Open source is about freedom. Akira is going to give freedom to designers who want to use open source , "says Alessandro Castellani, web developer and creator of Akira. " I am also a Linux user, and I have been for years, but I am the first to admit that the current state of the Linux desktop does not allow designers to be productive and competitive in a world dominated by extremely fast, reliable and proprietary applications. modern for MacOS and Windows ".

With such an idea in mind, Castellani started a year ago the development of Akira, a UI (user interfaces) and UX (user experience) native Linux application, written in Vala and GTK+ 3 in tune with GNOME applications. and elementary OS. But he realized that it was too much work to do it alone, and that is why he is now launching a funding campaign to, in order to reach his economic goal, hire full-time the developers he needs, among which are some of the project elementary

Akira's campaign can be found on Kickstarter , where all the details of why, when and how of this project are given. The goal is 48,957 $, of which only 2,410 have been collected, although there are still 44 days to complete.

To achieve this , the estimated launch date for the first stable version of Akira would be for September 2019 and Distribution Format package, source code apart (any Linux distribution can compile it for themselves), Flatpak, besides being available in the repositories of elementary OS. Also, during the development period they will publish test versions through their own PPA (so it should be available for any Debian derivative).

Now, the question that you ask yourself: is something like Akira needed in Linux? According to Castellani, he aims to offer a genuine replacement for applications such as Sketch, Figma or Adobe XD , which others such as Inkscape, Glade and even Qt Creator can not cover. However, there are similar and open source things for Linux. Things like Pencil or Alva , which are not SVG editors or graphics, and in whose development you could perhaps contribute, instead of starting with something new. At the same time, the differences in the base technologies proposed by Akira are much more novel.

In any case and this initiative thrives or not, you can take a look at the source code of Akira on GitHub.

As we always tell you, think carefully before investing your money. It is one of the reasons why we barely echo economic campaigns, unless they sound interesting and come well endorsed.

How to create a USB with Windows from Linux

As it will surely happen to many, I have lost count of the times I have put a Linux distro in a USB to install or just to test. However, I had never done it with Windows ... until now. I had not done it because I have not used Windows for many years, nor have I the least interest in doing so; but ... it has touched me.

I had to start looking for how to do something that I did not even know if it could be done, although I imagined it was: recording Windows on a USB stick from Linux . And yes, it can and is very easy, in addition. The tool I have used is WoeUSB, derived from an older one called WinUSB, abandoned several years ago. WoeUSB is composed of a simple graphical assistant and a more powerful client for console, supports all versions of Windows from Vista and to top it off, it is free software.

WoeUSB is available in the Fedora, openSUSE and Gentoo repositories; in AUR for Arch Linux and derivatives and in the PPA of WebUpd8 , a blog that has not published anything for a long time, but whose author keeps keeping his packages up to date (this is one of those applications that screams Flatpak, Snap or AppImage).

Once WoeUSB is installed, the assistant looks like this:

Simplest impossible: you choose the Windows image, either a disk image or a DVD; you choose the destination device, which will usually be the USB that you have inserted ( by default it only shows the removable storage , but you have the option to show all the devices ... option that is better not to touch, if you do not know what you are doing) ... and voilĂ  ... failure, because at the end of the second decade of the 21st century the file system with which it formats by default is FAT , which does not support files larger than 4 GB.

Luckily, where the assistant does not arrive, the terminal arrives, and one of the novelties of WoeUSB is to be able to format in NTFS , but it is only implemented in the command line. This is done:

The first thing is to make sure the unit to format, something very simple because you just saw it in the wizard: if you have recognized the USB there, look at the path where it says "/dev/sd*" and do not continue until you are one hundred for sure .

Once the device is recognized, put the Windows image on your home and launch a command like this with administrator permissions (sudo / su):
woeusb --target-filesystem NTFS --device Win10_1809Oct_Spanish_x64.iso /dev/sde
With that exact order is how I installed Windows on a USB: the first option indicates that the USB is formatted in NTFS and the second includes the full name of the Windows installation image and the target device. Forty minutes later, my USB with Windows was ready for action.

Additionally, memory can be formatted by other means and with WoeUSB copy the Windows image; but put to use the console and knowing that the formatting takes just a few minutes, better to do everything by console. For more information about the WoeUSB options, its manual page : launch "woeusb man" by console to view it.

And remember: the most delicate thing about the whole process is not to make a mistake about the device, because you can mess it up.

GNOME: a new version of the GTK+ Adwaita theme is coming soon

The GNOME developer Matthias Clasen revealed some news coming to GNOME. Clasen has revealed that in the next three weeks the new Adwaita theme will be tested, which is default on GNOME, collecting user feedback on the changes made.

You must know that with the release of GTK+ 3.24.3, the developers have released an updated version of Adwaita that is currently in the form of "trial".

Here are some of the changes introduced:
  • The header bars and buttons are more elegant
  • Buttons using shadows, no longer have "solid" edges, and are more rounded in corners
  • The header bars are darker to bring out the buttons
  • The switches will no longer have the "ON" and "OFF" labels
  • Many colors have been improved and are more vivid, vibrant and the palette is more extensive and complete

These are small finishes that certainly do not alter the usability of GNOME so I do not see why they should not be approved. They contribute to give a more modern look to Adwaita especially because they will go to marry with the new icon set that will arrive together with GNOME 3.32 .

The theme is already available now . To try it, extract the archive NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz in your folder ~/.themes.

You can do everything with the following commands:

  • wget https://download.gnome.org/misc/testing/Adwaita/NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz
  • mkdir -p ~/.themes
  • tar xf NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz -C ~/.themes

To change the set theme use GNOME Tweaks tool (Appearance -> change the Applications theme) and choose NewAdwaita.

Debian 10 begins the freezing period and releases 'artwork'

Everything seems to indicate that 2019 will launch a new major version of the "universal operating system". Debian 10 codenamed ' Buster ' began the period of freezing packages a couple of days ago, it will be completed in a couple of months and then the stretch before the final release will arrive.

Specifically, it was on January 12 when what they call ' transition freeze ' began, a month in which major changes in packages are no longer allowed; on February 12 the 'soft-freeze' starts, during which only minor corrections are accepted; and March 12 marks the 'full-freeze', from which only packages are included after the manual review of the launch team. More information on this link.

If we look at the cadence of distribution releases in recent years, Debian 9 arrived in June 2017, Debian 8 in April 2015, Debian 7 in May 2013 ... So, everything seems to indicate that in the middle of 2019 should launch Debian 10 . However, Debian is one of those distributions that only publish the stable version when they consider it truly stable - and even so, some error can always sneak in - and the possibility of an unforeseen event that delays it is there.

Regarding the new features of Debian 10, beyond the rigorous updates, among which are the Linux kernel 4.15 or the GNOME 3.30 desktop environment , work is being done to implement UEFI Secure Boot support . We will tell you everything when the time is right.

Meanwhile, the "frozen in transition", like someone who puts something delicate in the fridge, before passing it to the freezer, has left another small novelty: the new graphic art that will show the distribution and that you can see in the header image.

As you probably know, Debian names its versions by Toy Story characters and Debian 10 is Buster, a dachshund that appears in movies. The background image is, in fact, the figure of a dog, and the same thing happens with the rest of what was the winning proposal of the contest that the community opened for such a task. You can see -and download- the complete set, as well as the material of the eleven finalists, in the Debian wiki.

Firefox 69 will deactivate all Flash content by default

Mozilla has confirmed that the contents shown on the Flash pages will be blocked starting from the release of Firefox 69. The definitive abandonment of the Flash technology is expected by the end of 2020, in line with Adobe's programming.

With the release of Firefox 69 (currently the latest "stable" version is 64) Mozilla will completely disable the support of Adobe Flash technology and content.

The foundation had already confirmed its intention to finally get rid of Flash in 2020: the development of HTML5, WebAssembly and WebGL applications allows today not only to substitute the Adobe technology but to realize complex applications.

To give developers time to prepare for time, Mozilla had published the roadmap for the abandonment of NPAPI plugins, primarily Flash.

The old NPAPI plugins are in fact considered potentially risky from the point of view of security because they are loaded and executed in the context of the user account and are in no way protected (for example through use in sandbox ) by the browser.
For this same reason, Google removed support for the NPAPI plugin in Chrome as early as 2013.

Also in the course of 2020, Adobe itself will definitively abandon Flash: the release of security updates will be interrupted at the end of that year.
To deactivate the Flash content already from today and not even receive the request to upload it, if any, in Firefox just access the main menu, choose the item Add-ons , click on Plugin and then on Never activate.

[GUIDE] Here's how to install OpenJDK 11 on Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint

Although OpenJDK 11 is the last long-term release it is currently only available on Ubuntu 18.10 (and above). Let's see how to install OpenJDK 11 on Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04 or 14.04 and on Linux Mint 19. *, 18. * and 17. *. For those who do not know OpenJDK is a free implementation of the Java platform, standard edition. The implementation is licensed under the GNU GPL with the GPL linking exception.

OpenJDK on Ubuntu and Linux Mint
Users of Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19. * will notice that a package openjdk-11-jdk already present in the repositories, but the Java version associated with it is 10 and not 11. During the development cycle of Ubuntu 18.04 there was an SRU-exception to release "OpenJDK 10 as JRE/JDK default for Bionic" and then move to OpenJDK 11 in September/October 2018 that's why the package is called openjdk-11-jdk despite containing OpenJDK 10.

The update scheduled for September/October has not yet arrived. However, you can upgrade to OpenJDK 11 using an official PPA that contains packages not only for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS/Linux Mint 19.* but also for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS/Linux Mint 18.* and 17.*. I remind you that using the PPA (instead of the binaries) allows you to have automatic updates. Let's go in order. On Ubuntu 18.10 you just need to install the openjdk-11-jdk package:
sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk

On previous versions you have to add the PPA OpenJDK builds PPA (managed by PPA for OpenJDK team) and then install the package openjdk-11-jdk:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openjdk-r/ppasudo apt updatesudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk
After installing your Java version, if everything went well, it should be 11, verify it by giving it
java -version
If you only need Java JRE, install openjdk-11-jre instead of openjdk-11-jdk giving
sudo apt install openjdk-11-jre
If you want to go back to the previous version you can use the command ppa-purge that disables the PPA and downgrades all the packages.
sudo apt install ppa-purgesudo ppa-purge ppa:openjdk-r/ppa
On Mint instead, give the following command:
sudo ppa-purge -d <ubuntu_version> ppa:openjdk-r/ppa
Where instead of ubuntu_version you have to insert the version of Ubuntu associated with your Linux Mint installation, more precisely: bionic for Linux Mint 19.*, xenial for Linux Mint 18.* and trusty for Linux Mint 17.*

How to fix Windows 7 activation problems after patch KB971033

The patch KB971033 has been the cause of the last problems of activation of Windows 7. In this occasion we do not find isolated cases, but with a generalized failure that is affecting a great amount of users.

We already talked about the subject, where we saw, in addition, that the latest security patches were also giving problems at the level of connectivity and with the security solution Malwarebytes , one of the best known and best valued in the sector, especially for the potential offered by its free version.

In this article we are going to share with you a tutorial so that you can solve the problems of activation of Windows 7 caused by the patch KB971033. It is a simple process if you follow all the steps that we are going to give you, since in essence you will only have to copy the commands one by one and enter your user license.

You can also access the Microsoft website if you need more information.

How to troubleshoot Windows 7 activation

  • We must uninstall the patch  KB971033  and restart the computer. We will find it by looking in the path "Control Panel> Windows Update> View update history> Installed Updates".  We must select it by clicking with the right button so that the "delete" option appears .
  • Another option to uninstall this patch is to enter  wusa /uninstall /kb:971033 in the "System Symbol" with administrator permissions.
  • We enter "System Symbol" with administrator permissions and we are entering the commands that we list.
  • net stop sppuinotify.
  • sc config sppuinotify start = disabled.
  • net stop sppsvc
  • from %windir%\system32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /ah.
  • from %windir%\system32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /ah.
  • from %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.dat.
  • from %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\cache\cache.dat.
  • net start sppsvc.
  • cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk Windows 7 license key, separated with hyphens.
  • cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato.
  • sc config sppuinotify start = demand.

We clarify, just in case, that the commands must be entered without the end point. Once you complete the process everything should go back to normal and the problems of activation of Windows 7 should have been resolved.

We imagine that Microsoft will end up launching an update in the coming days that puts an end to this problem directly, but if you can not wait, you just have to follow the steps we have taken.

How to use Find my iCloud iPhone: iPhone lost or stolen

How-to use-find-my-iP

Find my iPhone in iCloud to find an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, Mac) lost or stolen, as well as to protect or delete personal data on irrecoverable devices. If you have an iCloud account associated with your Apple device, you can register it in Find My iPhone . This keeps track of your device's GPS position at any time by recording the location on your iCloud account. If the device is lost or stolen, you can check that location from another device, lock the missing device or delete data from the device remotely.

How to activate find my iPhone
First, make sure you are logged into iCloud on this device. If you do not have an iCloud account, you will not be able to use Find my iPhone from a second device.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Tap your name at the top of the screen, then select " iCloud " from the menu.
  • At the bottom of the menu select "Find my iPhone".
  • Activate the cursors next to "Find My iPhone" and "Send Last Position" to enable Find My iPhone.

You can do the same thing on other iOS devices. MacOS devices have a similar function called "Find My Mac", enabled through the iCloud preferences pane of System Preferences.

How to use Find my iPhone
If you've activated Find My iPhone or Find My Mac, you can track your device's location from iCloud.com. You can also use another iOS device to locate your iPhone with the "Find iPhone" app on your iOS device.

  • Go to  iCloud.com  on any browser on any computer .
  • Log in to your Apple ID account .

If two-factor authentication is required, but the message can not be obtained, use the recovery key to log in. You must have saved these codes when you initially configured two-factor authentication.

  • Click on the "Find iPhone" icon.
  • Re-enter the password, if required.

While the device is on and connected to the network, the map shows a green pin on your iPhone's current location.

If your device is turned off or not connected to the network, the map shows a gray dot in its last recorded position. If the device can not be found, the last position will be shown for 24 hours. You will also have the possibility to receive an email notification when the device reconnects to the network.

More Tools to Find My iPhone
Click on the indicator in the device map to see more options.

Here you can delete your device, make it play or lock the device in lost mode.

Delete the device
Deleting the device will delete all contents on the device, returning it to the factory state. Before deleting the device, try to find it by making it sound or by activating the Lost mode. A deleted device can not be tracked and therefore more searched  with Find my iPhone, as it will no longer be connected to your account. It could also make it easier for thieves to resell your device. If you end up recovering the deleted iPhone, you can restore it from the most recent backup of iTunes or iCloud. Mac and Apple Watch can be restored with their own backup systems, as appropriate.

  • Select "Delete iPhone" from the options menu.
  • Confirm that you are ready to delete the device.

After confirming the cancellation, expect the following results:

  • You will receive a confirmation email to your Apple ID email address confirming that you have ordered the cancellation of your device.
  • Apple Pay will be immediately disabled.
  • If the device is currently online, the cancellation process will begin immediately. If not online, cancellation will start as soon as the device returns online.
  • The device will be canceled by the Apple ID, deactivating all functions related to Apple ID as iCloud.

Again, if you restore the device, you can restore it with the most recent backup. This is one of the many reasons why keeping recent backups is so crucial.

Lost mode on Find My iPhone
Lost Mode  locks the device and displays a message on the screen. It will be disabled for all other uses until it is unlocked with the current passcode. If your device does not have a passcode, you will be asked to create one. If you set your Mac in lost mode, you will be prompted to create a numeric unlock code when you enable Lost Mode. Make sure you keep this information safe. If you find your device but do not know the access code, only an Apple repair center can unlock it.

  • Select  Lost mode or Lock from the options menu.
  • Enter a contact phone number to be displayed on the lost device.
  • Enter a message to display on the lost device. When you're ready to lock the device, click "Finish".

If the device is found, it can be unlocked with the current passcode.

If you lose your device, the best solution is to use the lost or blocked mode . Do not delete the device until there are no more hopes of recovery or it becomes clear that the device has been stolen. If the device is stolen, it is better to delete it as soon as you notice it to avoid identity theft, loss of personal data or financial fraud.

Linux Release Roundup: Bash 5.0, VLC, Linux 4.20.1

Three news in a single article, yet another chapter of my personal Linux release roundup . As the title we speak of the Bash 5.0 (the RC1 was released), of VLC, which has exceeded 3 billion downloads, and the first point release of Linux 4.20 .

Bash 5.0
2019 is the year of the 5: after the announcement of Linux 5.0 is available for a few days the release candidate of the new Bash 5.0. Bash (acronym for bourne again shell) is the most used textual shell in the world. It is used in Unix and Unix-like operating systems, especially in GNU/Linux and macOS. This new release introduces a myriad of (very technical) fixes compared to version 4.4 as well as several new features and improvements to comply with POSIX specifications.

Among the innovations: it is now possible to remove entire groups of entries from the history, have been inserted several new variables including EPOCHREALTIME that contains the timestamp, this time with the milliseconds.

The number of changes currently implemented, at the time of writing, is 9654: unthinkable to report all of them. Therefore I refer you to the official documentation.

VLC: reached 3 billion downloads (!)

VLC Media Player , app developed by VideoLAN recently reached version 3.0.5 , has reached 3 billion downloads from the official website.

It is probably the most popular cross-platform multimedia playback application available so far, used by millions of users all over the world on all major platforms, including GNU / Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, Chrome OS and even Windows Phone. OS. And the numbers confirm the popularity achieved.

Only from the official website VLC has reached 3 billion unique downloads from a few days ago. Then if we consider all the third-party sites that distribute software. This number also does not take into account downloads from GNU/Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome OS and Windows Phone since most of the downloads for these platforms is done through the app store . Quota a billion had been reached in 2012, 2 billion in 2016, it took just over two years to reach 3 billion, a sign that the use of VLC is constantly growing.

In addition, for a few hours, the sixth point release of VLC 3.0 'Vetinari' was announced . VLC 3.0.6 introduces support for AV1 decoding, adds support for HDR to AV1 and fixes various bugs that have emerged in the last 10 days. VideoLAN has also announced that it is working to implement the AirPlay support in the Android version in order to allow streaming from the smartphone to the APPLE TVs.

Linux 4.20: here is the first point release
Two weeks after the launch of Linux 4.20, which I told you about here , Greg Kroah-Hartman released Linux 4.20.1 making this kernel officially stable (and no longer mainline).

This point release introduces changes to 187 files (1790 insertions and 872 deletions). If you have already installed the 4.20 kernel, upgrading to version 4.20.1 is highly recommended. If you are using an LTS version, you can also avoid updating. Find more details in the official announcement.

Samsung's foldable smartphone is optimized for multitasking

CES 2019 . Samsung's foldable smartphone has been the subject of a new presentation , although on this occasion the South Korean giant has opted to hold an event behind closed doors that only some of its most important partners have attended.

This suggests that Samsung's foldable smartphone is not yet ready to make its debut to the general public , and indeed it is. Some executives of diverse companies that have had the opportunity to attend the presentation behind closed doors of said terminal have confirmed that it is in its final stage at the level of hardware and software , and have also given some important details about it.

The first thing that strikes us is that the model that Samsung has shown does not fit with what we might consider as a final unit. This is because the prototype used showed an obvious mark produced by the fold, a problem that according to the South Korean giant is not present in the commercial version. To solve this setback Samsung has had to slightly modify the design that leaves the sides "slightly raised".

As expected, the foldable smartphone from Samsung has a considerable thickness when folded, but attendees have confirmed that it is not excessive and that it contributes to a better grip. If ergonomics is acceptable it does not have to be a major problem.

It has not transcended information about its specifications, but attendees have confirmed that it is optimized to offer a good experience in multitasking and that it can work as a smartphone and as a tablet. This double function is one of the keys that we have most mentioned when talking about the value that foldable smartphones can offer to justify their high selling price.

It is expected that this terminal will be announced at the MWC of 2019, an event that will take place next February. Samsung is convinced that it can place at least one million units, a very optimistic figure, especially considering that we are talking about a terminal that will cost between 1,500 and 2,000 dollars.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-7 roll-out: here are all the details

Work is going well on the part of the UBPorts guys who are getting used to more and more frequent releases. Just over a month ago they released the Ubuntu Touch OTA-6 . With the OTA-6 the Morph web browser has been improved , the ReCaptcha support has been introduced and a new Event dialog in the calendar, the Welcome Wizard has been updated and much more.

This new OTA-7 brings on our devices an important bug fixing work, three new keyboard themes, support for the Mir server display (for Qualcomm based smartphones) and support for the Nexus 7 2013 (Wi-Fi tablet) with Android 5.1.

The Morph web browser has still received the attention of the devs: added the possibility to close the tab (tab) opened by the Tab Switcher. The device will no longer turn off the display if you are watching a video. Fixed an issue that prevented users from closing a single browser window and another bug that reopened the tabs that were closed before opening a new session and other minor issues.

Improves support for the Nexus 4 and for devices with little RAM memory like the BQ Aquaris E4.5 and the BQ Aquaris E5 HD which closed the Unity8 UI when the memory ran out. Introduced support for QtWebEngine replacing Oxide, network side improvements for the Meizu PRO 5.

The roll-out of this update is under way and will end on Sunday 13/01, as announced in the official announcement. These devices are supported: Fairphone 2, Nexus 5, OnePlus One, BQ Aquaris M10 FHD, Meizu PRO 5, Meizu MX4, Nexus 4, BQ Aquaris E4.5, BQ Aquaris E5 HD and Nexus 7 2013 (Wi-Fi).

If you do not want to wait for the notification to update, you can give the following command in the adb shell:
sudo system-image-cli -v -p 0
Your smartphone will download and install the update.

How to correct corrupted or damaged data on your PS4

The "corrupted data" error that is most likely to be encountered will probably be labeled as CE-34875-7 or NP-32062-3 . This refers to data from a specific game that is corrupted, not to some kind of crucial data about your PS4 itself. The problem can occur during the installation of a game. When you stop responding, the error message is displayed and you stay with a half-installed game that can not be played.

Alternatively, the error may app arire while playing a game that you have already installed. The audio may start to flash, the frame rate decreases, so the game freezes and the same message is displayed.

How to correct corrupted or damaged data on your PS4
There are a couple of ways to solve this problem. The easiest option if it occurs during installation is to delete the damaged data file. To do so, go to Notifications on the PS4 main screen, press OPTIONS and select Download.

Then, highlight the damaged data (marked with a gray thumbnail with a jagged line looks like a light bulb), press OPTIONS and delete the data.

Then try reinstalling the game. If the problem re app is or your PS4 does not allow you to delete the damaged file, you will have to try another solution.

Restore the PS4 database
Rebuilding your PS4 database scans your PS4 system for any files that may be faulty or that do not work as they should. It does not delete any data and can correct corrupted data.

To rebuild your PS4 database, make sure the PS4 is turned off, then press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps (one after pressing the button, another a few seconds later). This should start your PS4 in safe mode .

Connect the PS4 controller to your PS4 via a USB cable (Bluetooth does not work on this screen) and select the 'Rebuild Database' option (should be option # 5). After a few minutes your PS4 database should be rebuilt, and it is hoped that the problems with the corrupted data will be solved.

These are the most convenient ways to fix corrupt data on PS4. If you still have problems, though, you may need to consider that your hard drive is damaged and will need to be replaced.

Alternatively, you can try the "Initialize PS4" option from the Safe Mode screen, which deletes all data on the system and restores the default settings. It's not a nice solution, but it may be necessary as a last resort.

Mozilla developers at work to improve Thunderbird

The developers behind Thunderbird , a well - known e-mail client developed by Mozilla , have outlined the goals for 2019 and, I must say, if all goes well we can get our hands on a much improved and certainly more complete version of Thunderbird .

Thunderbird will not be as popular as Firefox but it is certainly an application used by many users, especially in GNU/Linux , it is versatile, easy to use and, in my opinion, very convenient.

Thunderbird, in a world where e-mails are often managed by browsers or mobile, is useful for those who need to manage multiple e-mail accounts. It is easily configurable and allows to keep separate all incoming mail as well as the one sent by the various associated accounts. Each account can be configured to use the same SMTP server to send mail messages or different servers. You find it pre-installed even on Ubuntu .

Thunderbird 60 has introduced many full-bodied innovations including a new UI ("Photon UI"), a new logo as well as several fixes and important improvements.

The Thunderbird community manager, Ryan Sipes , said that they are working to refine the UI in order to make Thunderbird more beautiful and functional. Here are his words:
Among other changes, Thunderbird notifications will soon use the native OS notification system and there will be a "review" of the " settings " section .

It will improve support for Gmail, specifically with regard to labels and other ad-hoc features offered by the Google service.

Web-based email services like Gmail have undoubtedly affected the popularity of desktop email clients, but have not completely erased them. Many people still like to manage their mail offline or use specific add-ons. And this year, Thunderbird developers are willing to offer this group of users an even more solid experience.
