Debian 10 begins the freezing period and releases 'artwork'

Debian10Buster.png

Everything seems to indicate that 2019 will launch a new major version of the "universal operating system". Debian 10 codenamed ' Buster ' began the period of freezing packages a couple of days ago, it will be completed in a couple of months and then the stretch before the final release will arrive.

Specifically, it was on January 12 when what they call ' transition freeze ' began, a month in which major changes in packages are no longer allowed; on February 12 the 'soft-freeze' starts, during which only minor corrections are accepted; and March 12 marks the 'full-freeze', from which only packages are included after the manual review of the launch team. More information on this link.

If we look at the cadence of distribution releases in recent years, Debian 9 arrived in June 2017, Debian 8 in April 2015, Debian 7 in May 2013 ... So, everything seems to indicate that in the middle of 2019 should launch Debian 10 . However, Debian is one of those distributions that only publish the stable version when they consider it truly stable - and even so, some error can always sneak in - and the possibility of an unforeseen event that delays it is there.

Regarding the new features of Debian 10, beyond the rigorous updates, among which are the Linux kernel 4.15 or the GNOME 3.30 desktop environment , work is being done to implement UEFI Secure Boot support . We will tell you everything when the time is right.

Meanwhile, the "frozen in transition", like someone who puts something delicate in the fridge, before passing it to the freezer, has left another small novelty: the new graphic art that will show the distribution and that you can see in the header image.

As you probably know, Debian names its versions by Toy Story characters and Debian 10 is Buster, a dachshund that appears in movies. The background image is, in fact, the figure of a dog, and the same thing happens with the rest of what was the winning proposal of the contest that the community opened for such a task. You can see -and download- the complete set, as well as the material of the eleven finalists, in the Debian wiki.
