GNOME: a new version of the GTK+ Adwaita theme is coming soon

gnome-696x447

The GNOME developer Matthias Clasen revealed some news coming to GNOME. Clasen has revealed that in the next three weeks the new Adwaita theme will be tested, which is default on GNOME, collecting user feedback on the changes made.

You must know that with the release of GTK+ 3.24.3, the developers have released an updated version of Adwaita that is currently in the form of "trial".

Here are some of the changes introduced:
  • The header bars and buttons are more elegant
  • Buttons using shadows, no longer have "solid" edges, and are more rounded in corners
  • The header bars are darker to bring out the buttons
  • The switches will no longer have the "ON" and "OFF" labels
  • Many colors have been improved and are more vivid, vibrant and the palette is more extensive and complete

These are small finishes that certainly do not alter the usability of GNOME so I do not see why they should not be approved. They contribute to give a more modern look to Adwaita especially because they will go to marry with the new icon set that will arrive together with GNOME 3.32 .

The theme is already available now . To try it, extract the archive NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz in your folder ~/.themes.

You can do everything with the following commands:

  • wget https://download.gnome.org/misc/testing/Adwaita/NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz
  • mkdir -p ~/.themes
  • tar xf NewAdwaita-1.tar.xz -C ~/.themes

To change the set theme use GNOME Tweaks tool (Appearance -> change the Applications theme) and choose NewAdwaita.
