What's New in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

Well, Ubuntu 11.04 came out as we all know. This version brings important changes, particularly in the graphical user interface that at first may not like some or turn to rookies. But in a few days is usually

What's New in Ubuntu 11.04
  • Since there is no special version for netbooks. The desktop version and the netbook are the same now.
  • New interface. The new interface for Ubuntu 11.04 called unity and is a fairly radical change. Radical as to interface, but is still using Gnome 2 as desktop environment.
  • Kernel 2.6.38
  • LibreOffice into account OpenOffice. Basically the same thing with another name and 'free'
  • Banshee into account Rhythmbox
  • Firefox 4 as a browser.
  • New Default wallpapers for Ubuntu 11.04
  • All applications updated.
  • Center for updated software. Now lets you paint applications and write reviews about them.

You can download it from Ubuntu official website. For the few left who are not aware, Ubuntu is and always will be free (although I believe there are still people who do not know). And as always we recommend using torrents to download it is faster in general, allows parties and down less server overhead.

How to install Ubuntu 11.04
I've already explained, I made a tutorial for install ubuntu 4.11

As test
Ubuntu 11.04 can be tested online. Although servers will be saturated surely the days following the recent release of the distro.

And anyway, is a video summarizing the new features in this new version of Ubuntu.

Updating Ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04

Well my friends, the day has arrived. Today comes the new version of Ubuntu ,The 11.04, codenamed Natty Narwhal. You can download the image of CD from Official site, but if Ubuntu 10.10 you can make the process easier.

On the desktop type the key combination ALT+F2. A window to run an application. Write it
update-manager -d
And this will run the Update Manager, which will see a new option:

Now select the Upgrade option. I asked to read the documentation for the version of Ubuntu coming out and asks if you want to perform the upgrade. If you agree, start downloading and installing. Be patient, it will take a little.

Once done, reboot, and poof! Ubuntu Natty Narwhal Installed:

I hope you have served, Greetings!

Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio and Mythbuntu 11.04 are also here!

Ubuntu 4.11 'Natty Narwhal' has not come alone, has a whole family around the complements in several sections and tastes, and new versions are waiting to be downloaded: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio and Mythbuntu 11.04 are also here!

On this occasion the number of links is such that it is best to direct you download pages of each project ,Where you will find the different editions and links for direct download or torrent. If what you want is the "normal version", just choose those identified as "desktop" and type architecture (i386 for 32-bit, amd64 for 64-bit):
As you probably can see, the versions Ubuntu Studio and Mythbuntu are not yet available, But is expected to be soon.

And there is much to tell the younger sisters of Ubuntu. All have the same "background" major version, including the Linux kernel and major components, just change the "shape".

For example, Kubuntu and Xubuntu main features include KDE SC 4.6.2 and Xfce 4.8 respectively, while Ubuntu Studio and Mythbuntu not yet know practically nothing. Everything else stays chosen software configuration and there are no surprises there (but if any, I will count them.)

Meanwhile, To download away!

12 common mistakes committed by newbies in linux

With the advent of new Ubuntu 11.04 also get a lot of beginners to GNU/Linux world. Usually come from the world of windows tired of viruses, reboots, slow, etc etc.

All those new Linux users probably followed some tutorial to install ubuntu from the many that exist in the web. But then, being face to face with linux very typical mistakes like these ...

Assume that they are using windows. Believe it or not exist in this world who can not distinguish whether they are using a Windows, a Mac or Linux. Then assume that everything works the same way and it is not, each OS has its way of doing things.

They try to run the .Exe. Many times I have received criticism by saying that in one windows to double click a .Exe and installed a program and ubuntu does not work. They must understand that each operating system has made programs just for them.

Not finding programs. It has to do with the 2 above, people think you have to go to google and search for "chrome for ubuntu" when in fact they have to open synaptic or Ubuntu software center and there are all programs that are going to need in your life and many more.

Choosing the wrong distribution of Linux. This is simple but many do wrong, simple ignorance of course. If you are a beginner you should choose: ubuntu or linux mint or mandriva. You should never choose arch or slackware or gentoo.

LibreOffice send files to Windows users in the default format. LibreOffice and OpenOffice (if anyone still uses it) save files in a free format that is unintelligible by microsoft office. So before you save a document Be sure to save in the correct format .... If you are going to send a Windows user.

Dodge console. It is understandable that new users will be afraid of the console as it was reminded to use DOS. And the fact that today a user can live without ever touching the console. But learning to use a little can make a big difference in productivity.

Giving up too fast
. Many users do not stay an hour or linux. Sometimes trying to do things like log in to the msn and not make it and just go with the impression that Linux is useless. Try to inform the user and explain it patiently. For this there are also many blogs dedicated to linux.

Think that the windows directory are the same in linux. In linux there is no C, in linux home directory is called root and is symbolized by "/". In Linux the directory is /home/USERNAME

Skipping updates. In windows updates get headaches and feel like hitting the PC, besides we're not even sure it is installed. In Linux however updates are annoying, can be automatic or manual but never bother the user. And always bring good things with it, more security, improvements in some programs, etc. Do not skip updates on Linux!

Login as root. I must admit that I also made this mistake in the past and when I was a beginner. Not to be entering the password each time then logs in me as root. Which is very dangerous, but if it is connected to the Internet.

Missing windows. I've seen happen to everyone using linux at all. You are browsing or doing something and suddenly they lost a window. They think that have closed or linux windows close by themselves. No, what happened was that insurance was sent to another desktop. That must explain to the new desks that exist and how to use.

Ignoring safety. Actually I've never had a single virus or not to use antivirus in the several years I've been using linux. But that is no reason to compromise the security of your system. They should know the basic safety rules such as not logging in as root, install preferred programs from the repositories, etc. Linux it means they have a system 1000 times safer than it was windows but does not mean it is completely perfect.

Shutdown and reboot buttons on your Ubuntu desktop

Some time ago I wanted to place a button on the desktop to allow me to turn off the computer. More than anything pigeon, for that of not having to go to the menu to turn off the computer. You see nothing special. Time whim.

Not that he has devoted much time to this, but of course when I saw the other day, it made me laugh, and then today's article.

The sense of the matter is that we edit the sudoers file to allow the use of shutdown or reboot, but we do it through D-Bus. This allows us to put a couple of buttons to shutdown or reboot (or more) on the desktop, which was what I wanted, leaving the thing as this:

Code Shutdown, Reboot, suspend and hibernate

The file you have to give execute permission. For example if we call it "Shutdown":

chmod +x Shutdown
The same will be done to the other commands:
dbus-send –system –print-reply –dest=org.freedesktop.Hal \
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer \
dbus-send –system –print-reply –dest=org.freedesktop.Hal \
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer \
dbus-send –system –print-reply –dest=org.freedesktop.Hal \
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer \
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:1
dbus-send –system –print-reply –dest=org.freedesktop.Hal \
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer \
Button code

The file you'll have to save as Shutdown.desktop, with the following contents:
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Exec have to change to the address where you have located the file to execute.

VirtualBox 4.0.6: up to 256 kernels, and improved support for Unity

Oracle has released VirtualBox 4.0.6 ,The latest version of its virtualization application available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and is the third stable update VirtualBox 4.0.

According to the developers, this update integrates more than 50 changes and correctionsIncluding those affecting VirtualBox 4.04, which added support for guest machines with Ubuntu 11.04.

so far, VirtualBox does not support more than 64 kernels and threads on hyperthreading, but this latest version comes to support up to 256 kernels (Not the Windows version), as well as providing support for key combinations of the host machine and the ability to store snapshots in the same directory of the virtual machine.

There are also several fixes for Mac OS X hosts and X11, Support for X.Org Server 11.0 for Linux and several new features, including improved support for autorun and corrections to kernel 2.6.39-rc1.

Another important change is the version improved support for Unity, Which was glitches in the previous version but now seems solved if you activate the hardware acceleration in the virtual machine configuration with Ubuntu 11.04, and although some users seem to have problems by an odd mix of drivers (such user error), it seems that the current support is correct.

For those who older version of VirtualBox, as I do, if you Unity not working you will have to install the package virtualbox-ose-guest-x11.

You can check List of changes here ,And Download VirtualBox 4.0.6 in Official project page, Which as we mentioned offers versions for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris also.

How To Install BURG in Ubuntu

BURG is a program based on that Grub2 allows us to easily customize the bootloader. To install add these repositories:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bean123ch/burg
sudo apt-get update
I installed the following:
sudo apt-get install burg burg-emu burg-pc burg-themes-common burg-common burg-themes
When you exit this screen, you leave the field empty first and the second you put quiet splash as in the image.

In this screen if you only have an option You select, if you have more and do not know which to select all.

With this we have burg and some themes for it installed to change the subject have to press 't' in the boot menu.

To view the items we can use the command:

Configuring Unity on Ubuntu 11.04, launcher behavior

We saw in a previous post how to install CCSM in Ubuntu 11.04 to access the settings for some aspects of Unity.

In this post we will see some options you can use to modify the behavior of the Unity

We said that pressing Alt+F2 and typing "about:config" went directly to the Unity configuration of Compiz and we would see a screen like this.

Let's start with the tab Behaviour, The first item we have is Reveal Mode.

Supposedly ,This section is for setting the edge where passing the mousse launcher panel is displayed, I must say that I've tried to put such right and I have not worked, I have worked only 3 on the left, second I think it makes sense since there is the launcher, it makes no sense I think, set the launcheris displayed when putting the cursor to the right of the screen, there are some points that will tell them in conflict with other plugins of compiz, so manage it carefully.

Hide Launcher

In this section we set concealment options Unity launcher discretion:
  • Never - The launcher never sets.
  • Autohide - The launcher is automatically hidden after a while.
  • Dodge Windows - The launcher will be hidden when a window overlaps with it. (Enabled by default)
  • Dodge Active Windows - The launcher will be hidden when a window active overlaps with it.
The following are the keyboard shortcuts available for the shooter.

Key to display the Launcher -Default Super- (Or the button with the logo of a popular proprietary operating system ) If we keep the Super key down a few more seconds, we will see the available shortcuts to launch different applications. (In the capture, the image on the left)

Key to focus on the
launcher -Default Alt+F1- And to navigate it with the keyboard (in the capture, the image on the right).

Key to execute a command -Default Alt+F2- The combination opens the search dash where you can enter a command to run for example. one that we saw here about:config to run the Unity plugin

Key to open the first panel menu -F10 default-

In a future post we see in detail the experimental tab options.

Configuring Unity on Ubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu 11.04 not bring, at least until the release of latest beta- No tool to configure settings in Unity installed by default.

However, this is easily solved, since many of the graphic aspects of Unity can configure it from your plug in Compiz settings manager.

In this post we will install the Compiz settings manager in Ubuntu 11.04, And other post we will see what we can do to change some options in it.

To make this task only to address the Software Center and in the search box type in ccsm and select to install the application "Advanced Configuration stationery" (In the image, already installed)

In contrast, if we want to do from a terminal, we just have to type
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Once installed, the method you prefer, you can access the settings in ccsm Unity in two ways:

Super key and in the search box tipeamos "ccsm" see an image like this.

By clicking on the Compiz Manager Options we open the application window and select the plugin must Unity, highlighted in the following image.

Another even faster access to the Unity plugin in CCSM is using the key combination Alt+F2 and write "about:config"

By selecting the icon Unity we will go directly to the plugin configuration.

Here are several options you can configure, but we'll see in the following entries.

Retrieve list of installed packages, Save a list of all programs installed on Ubuntu

Next week I will make an installation of Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 (64 bits) from scratch, but I will not lose the programs that I have currently installed. I searched on the solution to this problem is that with a single command can save a list of all packages installed on our current Ubuntu installation. The procedure is as follows:

First keep the list:
dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall > ubuntu-files #this can be changed by the name you want, it will save the file where the list but should be no spaces
One problem you may encounter is that you do not have the same list of repositories. To fix that use this command (before formatting):
cp /etc/apt/sources.list ~/sources.list
Now save the files in a pen or on a hard drive that we will not format, which will be in our home folder.

For when you want to install it, the first thing to do is join the two lists of repositories, copy only the deb or deb-src of the old equipment, not to fill it with unnecessary comments the new repositories.

And when you want to install use these commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo dpkg --set-selections < ubuntu-files
sudo dselect install
If you appear as non-existent dselect is that you must install:
sudo apt-get install dselect
This is can be used both for domestic use, as I do, or to install the same software on multiple computers, such as a company.

Firefox 4 flashing with Flash

Greetings to all

This "tutorial" originated in a problem, as all ... my computer with 64-bit processor, Firefox 4 to use any site with Flash, blinked and did not allow correct navigation so:
1. I uninstalled the Flash plugin for Firefox
2. Download from the adobe labs site the latest version of flash plugin, but for 64-bit Adobe Labs
3. Unzip the downloaded file
4. Move the libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins
5. In the case of Firefox 4 it was not necessary to restart the application (ILY GNU/LINUX) .. and ready!

I hope that will help them.

[HOW TO] Change TTY resolution after Install proprietary driver (10.10)

Sometimes we find that after installing the proprietary driver for our graphics cards, the resolution of the TTY is the size of a thumb character.

To solve this problem, I present this [HOWTO] in order to solve

1. We need the following packages:
sudo apt-get install v86d hwinfo
2. We seek the ID of our favorite resolution:
sudo hwinfo --framebuffer | grep "Mode"
see something like this:
Model: "NVIDIA NV34 Board - p162-2nz"

The hexadecimal numbers are iD (Identifiers), in my case I chose 0x0318, which corresponds to 1024x768 resolution.

3. Now we must tell the kernel to use when starting resolution.
sudo gedit  /etc/default/grub
In this file find the following lines:
and change it chose the resolution.
Note: You must be sure that your monitor supports the latest resolution listed for "hwinfo" in my case it worked, and I chose 1024x728. Note the CHANGES IN THE TEXT.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1027x768-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"

Nothing of GIMP 2.8 until November (minimum)

Martin Nordholts, software engineer at Sony Ericsson, is the leading developer of GIMP, The picture editor who recently version 2.7.2 released, Has some news about the forecast of the expected appearance of GIMP 2.8, a development that has long been in the limelight and that theoretically would appear in December 2010.

But that did not happen ,And many people wonder what is happening with the development. We fear that the essential reason is that there is much to do and few people to do it, so obviously the thing is getting longer than we would like.

Martin explains in his blog they just wanted to try to offer a Approximate planning the release of GIMP 2.8, And this has made use of tasktaste.com, service allows you to create project schedules and now is the method that lets us know roughly when will GIMP 2.8.

And according to that graph by Martin, GIMP 2.8 will be completed by 25 November 2011, And so taking into account the whole process goes as expected. There are a few failures and included in such planning with their respective size and importance, so if you are programmers and want to contribute to the development of GIMP, the project certainly is not bad, and your CV either

Windows Live Messenger has come to Android, Also to Linux?

Has finally announced what many users of mobile operating system by Google expected to win: Windows Live Messenger has come to Android. Could we also use Linux?

The news was first leaked on the French website Clubic on 11 April, a few hours before his run. Since then it is possible will find yourself Windows Live Messenger in the Android Market. or Messenger by Miyowa ,Because this is how it actually called both the application and the company that created it.

Why not talk about a client developed by Microsoft, which was not even for Windows Phone, but the official option authorized by the Redmond for Android and Windows Phone.

The question now is, Would it be possible to also use Linux? Supposedly, and should be. Though designed for mobile devices, it should be a good match with that network, one of the complaints that often have native Linux clients whose "solution" might be it. Because clones already, and will not be missing MSN client for Android.

Add Dropbox Indicator to Ubuntu Natty Narwhal

Installing Ubuntu perfect, everything works fine, and start to sync my Dropbox folder... And oh, surprise. Could not see the icon. Then I remembered that now I had to display the Notification area. I tried upgrade to the latest version and still did not receive the icon.

So I searched and found this solution that can enable the display of Dropbox, or AppIndicator, which will display on our desktop client.

To download, follow these steps:

Open a terminal and dropbox process ends with :
dropbox stop
Delete the folder dropbox settings on our team (the same as delete when we update dropbox):
rm -r ~/.dropbox-dist
Download the latest version of Dropbox, supporting AppIndicator. If you have 32-bit writes:
wget http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86-1.1.7.tar.gz
tar -xvf dropbox-lnx.x86-1.1.7.tar.gz
If you have 64-bit command cd
wget http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86_64-1.1.7.tar.gz
tar -xvf dropbox-lnx.x86_64-1.1.7.tar.gz
Now start with Appindicator Dropbox:
dropbox start
If all goes well, they'll see this:

See? Very easy.

[Solution] When you open "Sites" opens the Totem player

For some strange reason ,Gnome ceased to "know how to open" media files with the default application, and more importantly, when I opened any of the folders in Sites ,It was with the movie player, namely Totem. As I said before know the reason, but how to fix it, since the problem was in the association of applications, so I opened mimeapps.list, And there I saw the reason for what happened to me, to open directory was set as the default application Player. Now here's how to change.

When you open the configuration file Edit the file mimeapps.list from a terminal. We opened with this order by changing where it says user for ours:
gedit /home/usuario/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
and modify the line below, nautilus changing where it says player:
Store and we will not have that problem.

Enable/disable services at the start of Ubuntu

In most Linux users like us optimization, the system works best by consuming only the bare minimum. But Linux will not make all the work alone, we must help. This time we will help disabling unnecessary services.

For example: Bluethoot, mysql, hplip, ssh. These things do not always use, therefore would not be better to have disabled? Use only when the need?

Well, one way enable or disable these things the team would start changing the permissions of the files in init.d, There are also graphical tools such as Bum to help us do the same.

But today I am presenting is called sysv-rc-conf and bum does the same thing, but it shows all services that start with linux (unlike Bum not all shown).

To install sysv-rc-conf simply do a:
sudo apt-get install sysv-rc-conf
And run with:
sudo sysv-rc-conf
The program looks like this:

  • Each line represents a service.
  • Each column represents a runlevel (system state: established, in use, stopped, reset ...)
  • The normal working runlevel in Ubuntu is 2.
  • Use CTRL+N to move to the next page of services and CTRL+P to go to the previous page.
  • Use the arrows to scroll.
  • Use the space bar to check or uncheck a box.
  • Press Q to exit.
  • In general to disable a service at the beginning, you have to uncheck the boxes in columns 2 and 5 for the service. To re-enable it, check these boxes again.
  • For a humanly comprehensible description of services, see the following link : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InitScriptHumanDescriptions
Well I hope they serve and to optimize the boot of Ubuntu/Linux, is one of the ways to achieve Ubuntu faster.

Manage your folders and files on Android, from the PC via WIFI

The application of which I am going to talk about is WebSharingLite File/Media Sync they can transfer this file gives you information about the battery, the wifi signal and use the processor and the sd.

Running the application will see something like this:

You enter the ip and port show you in any browser and enter password showing underneath. The only problem I find is that you transfer the files one by one.

Nmap, scans your computer ports

Nmap is a security tool used, among other things, show open ports of a team. It is also possible to "request" Nmap to show us additional information on each port as well as the operating system itself.

As Nmap is included in the Ubuntu repositories, so installation is simple:
sudo apt-get install nmap
Once installed, you can do the most basic test:

As you can see, on my computer I have 3 ports open: the 139 and 445 belong to NetBIOS (network sharing folders/files, because I have a shared folder), and 631 corresponds to IPP (Internet Printing Protocol or Service print.) If you want to make a more complete test, you can use option -sV in the command line. With this option you get, as well as open ports, version of the service associated with each port:

It is possible to conduct even more detailed evidence, which show open ports, service versions, operating system version, etc. with the following command line:
nmap -A --osscan-guess
-A > Detecting Operating system ,versions of services ...

-- Osscan-guess > Operating system detection "aggressive".

Finally, if you find yourself comfortable using the terminal, the option to install a GUI for Nmap called Zenmap ,Also included in the Ubuntu repositories:
sudo apt-get install zenmap
Be installed as Applications - Internet - Zenmap. Here is a screenshot of Zenmap equivalent to the second test we saw in this post:

Then I leave the link to the Nmap website showing all available options. I hope that helps you:

A greeting.
