linuxmint19

As expected, when there are only a few days left to celebrate Christmas Clemente Lefebvre has just announced the launch of Linux Mint 19.1 , a new version of the distribution that as usual comes in its three classic editions: Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce .

Linux Mint 19.1 codenamed 'Tesa' is the second major update of this version, based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and with hardly any changes with respect to the base packages of this, including the Linux kernel 4.15 , Table 18 , Python 3, OpenJDK 10 and a support that will extend until 2023. For the rest, the novelties are shared between the desks of each flavor and the improvements that usually share among themselves, mainly applications and administration tools.

On this occasion, however, only Cinnamon receives a new version, while the other two remain with the one they brought in the previous one: MATE 1.20 and Xfce 4.12 , in both cases with many patches and minor updates on top.

The highlight of Linux Mint 19.1 is Cinnamon 4.0, a new major version of the desktop with many interesting news. The first, a renewed layout of the panel, which goes from the classic style Windows XP to a more modern with a task manager based on icons, such as Windows 10. However, the user can choose which one to use from the same welcome screen or configure it to your liking later.

In addition, Nemo comes with new options, such as the possibility of assigning view of thumbnails or icons according to the directory (as in KDE Plasma).

Other changes that benefit the three editions include the update manager , which has facilitated the task of (only if you want or need) choose a version of the kernel different from the default, including information about the support of those that are available; a slight redesign of the manager of software sources and the same for desktop themes, which gain in variety (colors) and quality (contrast).

Linux Mint 19.1 also brings the improvements corresponding to the set of default applications that share the flavors of Linux Mint, known as XApps among which are the Xed text editor or the Xreader document viewer, refined for the occasion.
