Purism has ready the Librem 5 dev kit, it will be ready for April 2019

Purism in 2017 announced a funding campaign for the creation of a smartphone based on GNU/Linux that respects user privacy. The idea of crowdfunders is to make a smartphone as open as possible that guarantees the privacy of users at a reasonable price (equivalent to 599 US dollars). The crowdfunding campaign was a success and the Librem 5, this is the name of the device, is under development . We have updated periodically about the news emerged on the Librem, which will also support Ubuntu Touch , brought forward by UBports.

The news today is that Purism has ready the dev kit of the Librem 5 that will be ready in the spring of 2019 (late compared to the roadmap that was scheduled to launch for January '19). Delay due to the discovery of two bugs in the CPU (built by NXP) that seriously increase consumption.

The dev kits are based on the i.MX 8M 64-bit ARM board and not on the old i.MX6 on which the old kits were based. These dev kit will be sent to the early adopters who will have to try them, test them and report problems to the developers in order to perfect the product. Clearly this process is fundamental because we are talking about a completely new device and therefore the problems will not be lacking.

"There is still a lot of work to be done to make the development kit really functional to the development of Librem 5, so we need your help, " said Purism. " The frenetic pace of continuous development and the progress we have made since assembling the hardware is incredible, but the path is still long and arduous".

I conclude by informing you that Purism has announced a Christmas bundle, called "It's a Secure Life", it is a discount ranging between 15% and 18% if you buy at least 2 of the following three products: Librem 5 (pre-order), Librem Key, Librem 15 (laptop).
