Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 78, the latest major version with support for macOS versions 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11. The release of this new edition for the stable channel coincides with the new major release for Firefox ESR which also reaches release 78.

Users who use macOS versions 10.9, 10.10, and 10.1 will be able to use the ESR version of Firefox 78.x which will be supported throughout 2021.

Here are the main news of Firefox 78

The Security Panel dashboard includes consolidated reports on monitoring security, data breaches, and password management. The new features allow us to:

    • Track how many violations we fixed directly from the dashboard
    • Check if one of your saved passwords may have been exposed in a data breach:
    • To view the dashboard just type in the address bar about: protections or select "Privacy protections" from the main menu.

Since many people try to fix Firefox problems by reinstalling it when a simple update is more likely to fix the problem, an Update button has been added to the installer.

With this version, the screen saver will no longer interrupt WebRTC calls on Firefox, improving conference calls, both audio and video.

The release of WebRender to Windows users with Intel GPUs, which offers improved graphics performance, is now available to an even wider audience.

    Firefox 78 ESR

Firefox 78 also coincides with the new Extended Support Release (ESR) version, where changes made over the previous 10 versions will now be distributed to ESR users. Some of the highlights are:

    • Kiosk mode
    • Client certificates
    • The Service Worker and Push APIs are now enabled
    • The autoplay lock function is enabled
    • Picture-in-Picture support
    • Viewing and managing web certificates in about: certificate

There is also the usual work for fixing security bugs.

    For Linux users

For Linux users, the minimum system requirements change. Firefox now requires GNU libc 2.17, libstdc ++ 4.8.1 and GTK + 3.14 or newer versions.

    Safety

As part of the work to deprecate obsolete cryptography, Mozilla has decided to disable all remaining DHE-based TLS ciphersuites. To mitigate the compatibility problems that may arise on some websites, Firefox 78 enables two other ciphersuites based on AES-GCM SHA2.

The TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 support has been disabled to improve connections to websites. Sites that don't support TLS 1.2 will now show an error page.

    Various improvements

The context menu (accessible by right-clicking on a tab) allows you to cancel closing multiple tabs with a single click.

Improved support for screen readers. For more information on Firefox 78, I invite you to read the release notes found at this address.
