Ubuntu Web development officially starts. This is confirmed by the official Twitter channel
This distribution, which is based on Canonical's operating system, sees Firefox as the protagonist. The aim is therefore to create a desktop environment based on web apps, an alternative to the increasingly popular Chrome OS.
Ubuntu Web: a desktop operating system, centric web-app
The world of computing, like it or not, is increasingly moving towards cloud infrastructures. From commonly used applications to video games, the general trend is to shift the use of services from local installations to remote use, via web browser. Operating systems, Chrome OS docet, are also more or less affected by this trend. Very often, these gigantic infrastructures work thanks to Linux. However, there is no real centric cloud operating system, based on the penguin. Even better if supported by a community of independent developers, rather than a multinational company that has data collection for advertising purposes as its core business.
In the past, some projects of Linux based cloud operating systems were born, born with the aim of creating a minimum of competition in the market. Examples are Apricity OS or Cub Linux. The second, in particular, was based precisely on Ubuntu but, as the main application, it used Chromium. These two projects, however, have been abandoned. The pressure of Chrome OS, at least in the desktop environment, in my opinion, is very strong and should not be taken aback. In the following image, I have shown you the statistics on the market share occupied by the various operating systems during the past year. The Chrome-based operating system has managed, despite its young age, to follow the quota occupied by the penguin, in a few years. Although, just remember, Chrome OS comes from a GNU/Linux (Gentoo) distro.
Ubuntu and Firefox as an alternative to Chrome OS
Ubuntu Web is a new project that aims to create an alternative to Chrome OS. It has as its main developer, Rudra Saraswat, developer of Ubuntu Unity Remix and Ubuntu Educational. What exactly do we know? In the current state of things not much actually. Currently, there is no other information about it, except that its use will be based on the Firefox web browser and that, of course, will not have the hardware limitations imposed by the Mountain View house.
What do you think of this particular Ubuntu variant? And of this general tendency to base everything on the cloud? Let me know in the comments section!
