[GUIDE] Here's how to install Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS HWE

Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS was released last Thursday on Desktop, Server and Cloud. This point release includes updates, bug fixing and a new hardware enablement stack (hwe).

The hardware enablement stack allows support for new generation hardware and introduces new drivers and a new kernel. In this case the Linux kernel and the server stack display are derived from Ubuntu 18.10 'Cosmic Cuttlefish'.

The onboard kernel is Ubuntu  Linux 4.18 . The new HWE also updates Xserver, Wayland and Mesa (18.2.x) as well as several drivers. In the next point release, the 18.04.3, expected for August, the kernel and the packages will come from Ubuntu 19.04 .

As you will know if you have also kept the system up-to-date, you have not received the new HWE. Let's see how to update.

Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS: here's how to install the Hardware Enablement Stack

If you want to try the new HWE you can install it using the following command:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04
On Ubuntu 18.04 servers install only the hwe kernel package:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04
Restart the PC after completing the procedure.

By doing so you have installed kernel 4.18 replacing 4.15 and X 1.20.1 instead of X 1.19.6.

If you want to check until the operating system is supported by Canonical and check if the hwe has been installed correctly, give the following command:
hwe-support-status --verbose
