Firefox versus Chrome Why should you use one or the other?

Firefox versus Chrome1
Google Chrome closed 2018 increasing its domain in web browsing and that's how it started in 2019, reaching a new record of 67.29% according to the January market share data published by  Netmarketshare . For its part, Firefox rose strongly (almost half a point) for the second month in a row, recovering minimums and touching the 10% barrier.

Edge also went up a few tenths but more for the momentum of Windows 10 where it is included by default. The Internet Explorer fell again , are virtually dead and are kept simply for business compatibility reasons. The Apple Safari is only used by one out of every three Mac users for a fee kept at 3%, while Opera remains below 2% and receding since its change of ownership. Vivaldi, Yandex, Sogou Explorer or QQ, are other developments that can be used, but are irrelevant in the overall quota.

The result is that waiting for what that Edge Chromium that has removed the segment of browsers can get what it means to use the same engine as Google and its opening to Windows 7, 8 and macOS,  Firefox is today the only real alternative to Chrome  for the great bulk of netizens. Today we put them face to face and review their advantages of use. Do not listen to assertions that say one is "better" than another because it is impossible to objectively sentence him. Our recommendation is the usual: try both and decide which one you like best or best suits your needs.

Firefox versus Chrome
Firefox and Chrome are two great developments and any type of user will be comfortable with them as exponents of modern web browsers. Firefox was born as an attempt by Mozilla to take back the legacy of Netscape Navigator after it released its code after being defenestrated by Internet Explorer before the own errors (of Netscape), the aggressive strategy of Microsoft and the use of Windows to boost it.

In its time, it was almost the only alternative to IE until Chrome appeared as the commercial solution of the technological base provided by Chromium, an open source development also created by Google that has become the great development for the creation of browsers, being used by others such as Opera, Maxthon, Vivaldi and Brave. And soon the same Microsoft for the new Edge.

Chromium, plus the huge Internet presence of related Google applications and services, has been largely responsible for Chrome dominating the web browser market by a wide margin.

Firefox versus Chrome

Strengths of Firefox
Although Firefox looks more and more like Chrome on the aesthetic level, it still maintains appreciable differences on the technological and conceptual level. Uses a different engine, offers extensive customization of the interface, own extensions, maintains a completely open development also in the conceptual field, being the only one of the great browsers under a completely open source development and betting on guaranteeing the privacy of the user. We review some of its advantages:

Quickness and lightness . The 'Quantum' treatment from Firefox 57 has made the Mozilla browser a great fit and has improved the speed of execution of its engine, the opening of the browser and the loading of pages. Mozilla says that Firefox consumes 30% less resources than Chrome, a 'tragón' especially in RAM. Although some users think that current browsers are too 'inflated' Chrome is the most in this regard. Firefox is just a browser, while Google thinks of turning Chrome into a platform by bringing it closer to Chrome OS.

Open Source . Firefox is the only one of the great browsers developed completely under open code and by a non-profit foundation. Firefox maintains a  complete public roadmap  that is influenced by taxpayers and community members. This type of community cooperation is a great value beyond concepts and allows anyone to see, change or redistribute their code. Although Chrome has Chromium components, it is not open and -obviously- all decisions about future direction are made internally within an organization that is due to its shareholders and the achievement of financial results.

Customization and extensions . Firefox has been characterized as an application of a very open nature, this means that not only its code is available to anyone, but also offers a very customizable interface. The user can change a good part of the browser options to adapt it to their needs. In Chrome the customization options are lower and the truth is that any version looks almost identical even on different platforms. As for extensions, Chrome has a much larger collection, but Firefox has several unique extensions (the tree style tab as an example), which are not available to Chrome users.

Privacy . Mozilla has highlighted since the beginning of Firefox the commitment to respect the right to privacy of its users. L to  privacy of Firefox  is clearly fixed and transparent information provides data that can be collected and these data are used. To highlight their special mode of private browsing they have finished implementing the rest. The differences here are simple. Mozilla is not Google, it does not live on the data collection of the Internet giant.

Firefox does what Chrome does . Do you want to synchronize tabs, bookmarks, profiles and more on different devices? Do you need to develop websites with the help of an element inspector and a console? What about security to prevent malware infections? Or a task manager to identify performance problems? In other words, anything you can do in Chrome you can probably do in Firefox. You will not have problems in the transition. Firefox facilitates the import of favorites or passwords and works perfectly with all types of pages.

Chrome's strengths
Interface . Google has bet from its first version by a minimalist interface, but intuitive and effective, with which any user can begin to use easily. Far from loading the application interface with options that the user rarely uses, he chose to put the main menu inside a button to the right of the address bar and took advantage of the title bar to eliminate it and place the tabs in place. . Although it can be customized, its interface is still very clear and simple, dedicated to what matters in a web browser.

Performance . The multiprocessing capability of Chrome allows you to take better advantage of the multicore capabilities of modern processors, offering a very fast loading of web pages and allowing a large number of open tabs, which are also managed separately. The deferred charge is another interesting feature recently implemented for faster loading of web pages. In short, Chrome offers great performance, even at the cost of increased resource consumption at both the CPU and RAM levels.

Security . Leaving aside the controversial aspects of privacy and the management of data collection, Google has done a great job in terms of security with Chrome. He was the first to implement process isolation (sandbox); in adopting end-to-end encryption in data synchronization; in marking unsafe pages to improve the adoption of HTTPS; the activation of private browsing with sensitive data; improvement of security in extensions; blocking of abusive ads and a long etc.

Ecosystem and Google services . If you use a lot of other services and applications from Google, using Chrome you will feel at home because its integration is massive and, in addition, you can use multiple accounts to configure several Chrome profiles. Some users consider that it is already too much and Chrome more and more resembles Chrome OS in terms of its possibilities, more than a browser a complete platform. Others appreciate it. If you are looking for the execution of complex applications in the same browser or you are looking for extensions to extend their functionality or customize it, no other browser offers so much.

Development and new technologies . The presence of Google on the Internet, the market share of Chrome and the use of a base like Chromium, gives it a significant influence so that sites and applications tend to be perfectly programmed in Chrome. Advanced web development is also usually easier in Chrome. For good or bad, the direction of web technologies is now in the hands of Google. The Microsoft Chromium Edge is a clear example.

What do you think? Which web browser do you like the most? Which one do you use. Why? You have to participate
