Bad performance with WSL? Install Linux, but do not disable the antivirus

WSL.jpg

The subsystem of Windows for Linux, better known as WSL and whose main practical components include the Bash shell and the utilities that usually accompany it, has been quite well received in the environment of developers and system administrators who depend on Windows, but they also need Linux to work. The integration of WSL has improved over time and more and more users are using it, but it is not without problems.

One of those problems is performance, and it's a big problem in some cases. Thus, while WSL performs very well in terms of the use of the CPU or the memory it consumes, reading and writing to disk can drastically drop such performance, to the point that virtualizing the system results in a better option. Because of this there is someone who is doing without keeping the antivirus active, thus recovering some margin to operate. But this solution can generate an even bigger problem.

It is the warning that Rich Turner has launched at the suggestion to disable Windows Defender -or any other antivirus- to improve performance. Turner is a Microsoft engineer and one of those responsible for the command line in Windows or, as he says, "bring Linux to Windows", so he is a deep expert on the subject. As he is aware of the delicate security in the Microsoft system without the relevant protections, including antivirus software.

" We are working with several teams at this time to find an effective solution to this performance problem and its impact. Meanwhile, we recommend patience. We DO NOT recommend disabling Defender (or the third-party antimalware suite chosen), nor do we recommend excluding WSL folders or code folders [from antivirus monitoring, it is understood], "says Turner, according to Phoronix.

Maybe in the next update of Windows 10 next April improve the situation, we must see it. What there is no doubt is that to use the tools of Linux, it is best to install Linux in the traditional way or, if preferred, virtualizing the system.
