After four months of waiting, we finally have KDE neon officially migrated to the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS technology base, the latest Canonical system version with 5 years of support (at least initially) and geared towards production environments ( although this does not mean that it is not an excellent system for home environments, quite the opposite).
Little presentation needs KDE neon anymore, a distribution of the KDE project started by Jonathan Riddell that takes the base of Ubuntu LTS and combines it with the latest versions of the Plasma desktop environment and KDE applications by adding its own repository. This peculiar combination has improved over time until it has become one of the best GNU/Linux systems that exist, as well as being for many the best way to enjoy the Plasma desktop environment.
The official announcement explains that users would have to “see a pop-up window on their installation the next day (starting today). It will ask to make sure the system is up to date and then it will update the database to 20.04, which takes a while to download and install. " Apart from migrating to the latest Ubuntu LTS, the main novelty is the new ISO images with the Calamares installer in all of them. KDE neon makers have added an OEM installation mode and a checkbox to check full disk encryption to the Calamares installer.
Changing the subject and following the KDE neon news, "Docker images still need to be updated and Snap packages have to move as well. " On the other hand, “the Testing and Unstable editions are created from the Git branches that will be released soon and the untested Git branches. Unfortunately, when testing the installable ISOs, we found some bugs in the Calamares Git installer, so they have not been released yet, but the update will still appear on existing installations. "
Well, we already have among us KDE neon updated to the base of Ubuntu 20.04. Seeing that the latest LTS in Canonical's system has gotten off to a very good start, hopefully, that will make for an excellent start for the renewal of one of the most interesting derivatives.
KDE neon installation images based on Focal Fossa are available on the project's official website, although those who are still using the Bionic Beaver base (18.04 LTS) can follow these instructions.
