With one of the latest updates of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the Ubuntu Software has definitely transformed into the Snap Store and this has brought an unpleasant side aspect: the Snap Store application allows you to manage the installation of only the applications in Snap format.
As you can see from the screen below, before the last update of the Store we had our dear and nice Ubuntu Software
Updating the system, we will find ourselves with the Snap Store
Solving the problem is possible and consists of the installation of GNOME Software, the application that we find by default on GNOME, and which, through the integrated snap plugin, is able to manage both the installation of applications from the repository and those in Snap format. You can install GNOME Software from the terminal
sudo apt install gnome-software
Now you will have both GNOME Software and the Snap Store
The choice is yours whether to remove the Snap Store or not and leave only GNOME Software.
Personally, although I make extensive use of applications in snap format, I prefer to have a Store that allows me to choose the source for the installation.
Among other things, if you try to search for an application on GNOME Software, unlike the Snap Store application, in addition to giving you the opportunity to install the application from the Ubuntu repositories or from the Snap Store
GNOME Software makes you choose the source for installing the programs
|
you will have the possibility to choose, for the applications present on the Snap Store, also the development channel (stable, candidate, beta, edge).
GNOME Software allows you to choose the development channel for applications in snap format |
Which the Snap Store app doesn't currently allow you to do.
