Technology journalists had been announcing it for some time and now it has finally materialized. Future desktops and laptops made by Apple will use new Apple Silicon chipsets, a new proprietary SoC platform developed internally and based on ARM architecture.
The first Mac to use the new Apple Silicon processors will arrive by the end of 2020 and the transition to the new architecture will be completed within two years. The first operating system capable of supporting Apple Silicon processors will be macOS 10.16 "Big Sur".
The move to ARM will allow Apple to have greater performance and at the same time better energy efficiency than current Intel solutions. The other big advantage will be the ability to run native iOS/iPodOS applications directly on macOS, without any modification.
Developers will be able, according to Apple, to be able to migrate their applications in a few days.
Users, thanks to Rosetta 2 technology, will still be able to run existing Mac applications that have not yet been updated to Apple Silicon.
Virtualization technology will also allow users to run Linux. During the WWDC 2020 keynote, a virtual machine with Debian and GNOME Shell was shown
