Canonical had said it and it was word of mouth: the coronavirus is not influencing in any way the development of Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa. The company has announced the arrival of the beta, a few hours behind the schedule. This beta offers fans and testers the opportunity to approach the various changes that will come with the final release expected for the end of the month (April 23).

Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa will have the Linux 5.4 kernel on board (and not the latest version announced by Torvalds ). The decision was confirmed through Brad Figg's post published on the official mailing list. The desktop environment will be GNOME 3.36, for which the first point release has been available for a few hours. Among the many new features, there is a renewed lock screen and a new dark mode accessible from the Appearance section.

The Ubuntu Software Store will be in Snap format and there is a new do-not-disturb mode.

On board you will find updated versions of the software chosen by Canonical: Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, etc. There is also support for the WireGuard VPN and for Livepatch, a feature to update the kernel without having to reboot the system.

In short, this beta is very close to what will be the final release, in fact, no new features will be added in the next few hours. If you decide to install the beta, you can update at the end of the month, simply by applying the updates.
