GNOME 3.36: new lock screen, new apps, improve performance

gnome-3.36

The new incarnation of the desktop environment is officially available

After six months of development GNOME 3.36 Gresik is finally ready. This new release in addition to the usual bug fixing work contains some interesting news.

Let's start the rundown by talking about the lock screen that has been deeply revisited. The login screen is simpler and in some ways elegant as well as easier to use.

Starting to use the desktop you immediately notice a new "Do not disturb" toggle in the notifications popover. If activated it hides all notifications.

Do not disturb
Present a new app called GNOME Extensions that allows you to manage GNOME Shell extensions in all aspects (update, configuration, removal, etc).

The developers then reorganized the settings section and those relating to the user: they are more intuitive and faster to navigate. The privacy section lists the apps that have been granted permission to access the camera, microphone, and location.

GNOME 3.36 download
Now that GNOME 3.36 is officially available, the developers of the various GNU/Linux distributions are taking care of the packaging of this update. At least in theory. Ubuntu and many other distributions do not update the DE except with the arrival of a new release. This means that the version of GNOME that you have found installed by default on your Ubuntu release is the only one supported and maintained throughout the life cycle of the release in question.

GNOME 3.36 is the heart of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa, which will arrive in late April, but also of Fedora 32 and the new version of openSUSE Tumbleweed. Don't you want to wait? You can download GNOME 3.36 from the official GNOME website where you can also consult the changelog.
