Starting today, the new daily builds of Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) will be based on Linux 4.17 . Version 4.17 of the kernel, released in June, offers several new features and improvements.
AMDGPU DC , the display stack integrated into the kernel, is now enabled by default and supports audio via HDMI and DisplayPort. The developers have introduced support for the new Radeon Vega 12 and HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and removed support for several unused CPUs (well 8). Present important improvements for energy management and support for ACPI TAD.
Linux 4.17 supports MediaTek MT7632A and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 CPUs as well as mainline support (ie without additional patches or additional drivers) for the Raspberry Pi 3B+ and for the Nintendo NES and SNES Classic Edition. Introduced mitigations for Specter for ARM architectures and improvements in support for USB 3.2 and USB Type-C.
Ubuntu 18.10 is in development since May and will be ready for the month of October. Therefore, more than two months to the final release are missing so it is not certain that the final version of the kernel that we will find on board is 4.17.
It is possible that, despite the times are a bit 'restricted, the developers decide to upgrade to the kernel 4.18 that will be launched in the coming days (if all goes according to plan on 12/08) by Linus Torvalds . Cosmic is not a LTS release and therefore Canonical can "dare" more by putting aside a little (so to speak) the much sought after stability.
Cosmic will also be able to count on GNOME 3.30 and the new community theme, Yaru , a theme developed by several members of the community initially referred to as "Communitheme".
