I recently came out of KDE SC 4.5 version with these developments:
- Major changes in notification area. Monochromatic icons are now used to provide visual clarity and redesigned pop-up notifications.
- The window manager Kwin now supports Tilling mode, allowing to organize windows on desktop without overlapping. Besides, now you can move windows by dragging a blank area of same (currently only works with applications Qt/KDE).
- The old interface for managing "activities" has been completely replaced by a "manager activities", similar to dialogue to add components.
- The workspace Plasma Netbook has also received significant improvements, especially in terms of performance.
- WebKit, the rendering engine used by Safari and Google Chrome (among others) has been fully integrated into KDE SC and it is possible to use web browser instead of Konqueror KHTML (which, however, remains default engine .)
- For first time includes a large application written entirely in Python. Kajongg game is a version four-player of classic Mahjong.
- The application of virtual globe can now plan routes Marble and download all data from a map for reference later without an Internet connection.
- It improves Phonon multimedia system integration with Pulseaudio.
This time it introduced fewer new features than other versions, since focus was centered on improving what already existed. The general opinion of developers is that with this version of KDE SC finally reached maturity and stability of mythical KDE 3.5.
