Tip: Install LibreOffice 3.4.1 on Ubuntu easily

I do not know if you have noticed, but for quite a while LibreOffice has 2 different versions. One, 3.3.X found in the official Ubuntu repositories and the PPA itself. And the 3.4.x version, which is not in the repositories but is installable. In my case, I have both versions, the first in Ubuntu and the second in Windows. I have found great differences, but many mentioned that greatly improves the support for pptx and xlsx files. (You can read the complete list of improvements here).

If you want to install version 3.4.1 can be really that complicated, because the official website gives you all the packages for download, which are at least 50, and asks you to download one by one.

But i have a much more simple to install. If you dare, follow these steps:

  • Delete the previous version of LibreOffice Opening a terminal and typing
sudo apt-get purge “libreoffice*.*”
  • Download from LibreOffice download page Version 3.4.1, sure to choose the version. DEB and x86 (unless you have installed Ubuntu 64-bit). Thus:

  • Move the 3 files downloaded to your /home and unpack. This will create 3 folders
Open a terminal and type the following command:
cd LibO_3.4.1rc3_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS&&sudo dpkg -i *.deb&&cd desktop-integration&&sudo dpkg -i *.deb&&cd ~/LibO_3.4.1rc3_Linux_x86_langpack-deb_es/DEBS&&sudo dpkg -i *.deb&&cd ~/LibO_3.4.1rc3_Linux_x86_helppack-deb_es/DEBS&&sudo dpkg -i *.deb&&exit

See? Was not so difficult.

Samsung SPH-M930: QWERTY and Android, at a price affordable predictably

Relax, you're not the only one who has experienced a little deja bu. Despite the first impression, Samsung SPH-M930 is a completely new terminal, which will shortly be on sale in the United States.

The detail is certainly misleading your keyboard QWERTY to Samsung Transform ,But details like the pushbutton mechanical Android (Gingerbread in this case) are sufficient to distinguish him from his older brother at second glance. Apparently, it has been developed for the U.S. carrier Boost Mobile, and will be offered as a prepaid phone, which undoubtedly has conditioned its hardware, rather throwing affordability; processor Snapdragon 1 GHz, HVGA screen (480 × 320) and a two megapixel camera Justita are its main features.

For now we do not know if it will be marketed outside the U.S., but we will be vigilant.

Install the spell checker in LibreOffice

Once LibreOffice installed on any computer, first thing I do is install a series of Extensions ,One of the most important may be the spelling checker, Which does not come by default.

To install simply download the extension from the page of OpenOffice. Once on our team, we opened LibreOffice, we Tools - Extensions and click on Add, go to the directory where we downloaded and installed, first accepting the conditions.

If we want to check off the words that are spelled correctly while composing the text, we mark the button Automatic review and we are underlined.

We can create our documents and correct spelling in case of an error or know how to spell certain words.

Get yourself Firefox and Thunderbird 5, 6, 7 and 8 via PPA

Recently we announced the availability of Firefox 6 and 8 for testing, also in Firefox 7. The installation was common to all distributions to be based on the executable provided by Mozilla. Users of Ubuntu and derivatives, however, have it easier.

Via PPA repositories useful for any active version of Ubuntu, get with the current stable version or the development of Firefox or Thunderbird is as easy as running the following in console:

5.0 (Stable):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
6.0 (Beta):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
7.0 (Aurora):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/firefox-aurora
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
8.0 (Nightly):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
5.0 (Stable):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
6.0 (Beta):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
7.0 (Aurora):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/thunderbird-aurora
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
8.0 (Nightly):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Eye to the fact: we have not tested or repositories or versions, but while the former are official or what is the same, insurance, development versions of both Firefox and Thunderbird are only for testing and are not recommended for production environments, especially the "Nightly" and "Aurora."

Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 3.0

If only three days ago we learned that the release of Linux 3.0 is delayed indefinitely due to a small error found late, and the "indefinite" is implied weeks the announcement has come.

Just as it did in the previous occasion, Linus Torvalds has again chosen as a means of disseminating Google+ which has been limited simply to say "3.0 PUSH OUT“.

Nothing more. Even The Linux Kernel Archives has updated its cover, which still appears as the latest version stable kernel, so it is difficult to give accurate information on developments Linux 3.0 will bring.

It is known that beyond the new numbers out of boredom or marketing-or both-this is an incremental release with many more error correction, addition of drivers, Etc, but promised "make concessions". If someone wants to take a look at the latest that was "touching" you will find information on the summary and summary notes.

In any event, as this becomes official announcement, said by Linus and is almost officially and be given more data, which could be today or tomorrow, we will offer the requested update information.

How to change the screen brightness of notebooks in linux

A classic problem with linux notebooks is screen brightness. Always starts at 100%. While it can be corrected with a key or key combination (fn + some key) is annoying to do it every time you boot the system as the changes do not stay for the next session.

The reality is that it's very easy to solve but sometimes newcomers do not realize how. Almost all distros come with a energy manager ,Is that a battery icon that always appears on the taskbar. If they right click on it and give "preferences" and there somewhere will have options to modify the brightness ,Depending on the energy manager to use will have more or less options such as the brightness is different when using the notebook with the battery or when connected to the mains.

But ... some do not use programs as 'complex' and prefer things 'simple'. No graphics applications, it is best command in the console

The first thing to do is type in the console:
They will return data on monitors that are connected, but we only want the name.

The following command will be:

xrandr –output LVDS1 –set BACKLIGHT 5
Changing the name to your monitor and adjusting the value 5 for a number of 1 to 10 representing the brightness level. I really like 2

Then just a matter of executing that command at the beginning of each session. In gnome you can find it in the menu that says "Applications to start", I use OpenBox and I have to put in the file .config/openbox/autostart.sh

I hope you learn

Add more options to the menu "Send To" of Windows

One of the good things I like about Windows is the ability to send any application, document or file in general to a program you have installed. The options are usually there to send to desktop (that is, create a shortcut), email, compress, among other things.

This list can be expanded if we are using a very light software called SendtoSendto you need to download here ,Be installed in seconds and put into practice. What makes this program is to add a new line that says "Add here" and click on this you can add another option that interests you.

To use is simple. After installing go to the application you want to add to the list, right click on it and then "Add Here". A new window will appear with the enforcement action and a button that says "Create" When you should do click.

After this the new line will be created and ready. For example, if you Dropbox installed on your computer and you can add any document will be sent immediately to this place with the new option.

Install firefox 8 in ubuntu - Install Firefox 8 PPA

Via twitter I find the news that there is a PPA to install the eighth version of this browser and beloved as Drive_in.com Tech is 20% faster compared to Firefox 5 and also the memory consumption is reduced (even though not specify how much).

To install just write the following in the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-trunk

How to install programs in Arch, Ubuntu, Fedora and Windows

Some basic after installing an OS is to install programs. Several programs are recommended for after installing ubuntu. But ... as you install a program on different operating systems?

Installing programs in Ubuntu
Open a terminal and type the command 'sudo apt-get install' followed by the program who wish to install. Example: we want to install gimp

sudo apt-get install gimp
Sometimes there will be programs that are not in the repositories (where ubuntu looks for programs) officers. But also with a command will be able to add those repositories. If they decide installing ubuntu you will realize how easy it is to install programs on linux.

Installing software in Fedora
Open a command console and type "sudo yum -i install" followed by the program who wish to install. Example:

sudo yum -y install gimp
It's the same with the fedora repositories, if any program is not just in the official repositories can be added.

Installing programs in Arch
The command in this distro is "sudo pacman -S" followed by the name of the program. Example:

sudo pacman -S gimp
In this case you just need to add a repository but the repository AUR.

All linux distros are installed if one prefers graphics for that. I personally prefer the console but every day they are becoming more and more popular installers graphics that are as easy to use. It's just find the program and a way to install and configure everything (no more than 2 clicks total).

How to install programs on Windows?
Here we make a distinction because there are 2 methods, one for free programs and other for payments programs.

Install free software in windows:

  1. Login to Home program
  2. Download
  3. Give two clickal. Exe to start the installer
  4. Just click on the following
  5. Accept the license
  6. Just click on the following
  7. Give button click to the end with the following
  8. Choose where to install
  9. Just click on the following
And that's all, relatively easy

Google+ application for iPhone Now Available [Google Plus]

Finally the Google+ application has been approved by the App Store for IOS (specifically for the iPhone). Unfortunately for now only available to those with U.S. account As with the version for Android.

Not much difference with the version for Android, the highlights I see is that part of the "Huddle", which basically is the chat between users having an account with Google+ so it is possible to communicate live whom we Android or iPhone .
Right now I'm trying, in a little update if there is any notable difference, and if I can find the option of "instant-upload" uqe apparently have forgotten integrate or, in short, was left out.

Delayed the release of Linux 3.0

Due to a error found late the launch of the anticipated new version of the Linux kernel, scheduled for today, is delayed until further order of the top brass Torvalds.

In fact, has himself been in charge of warning for this delay as much as through their Google+ Account ,Where he has posted the following message:
Why do we always subtle bugs just before release?

Not seem to launch the 3.0 today, just because Hugh has found a subtle error search path. We have a patch, we understand the problem, and it seems ObviouslyCorrect (tm), but I do not want to launch the 3.0 just a couple of hours after application.

Of course, the error is so hard to see that Hugh needs weeks to play even with their stress tests, so we just ignore it and make the solution later. But I really hate doing shots with known problems, even if it is almost certain that "no one will exploit it in practice."
It seems that Linus does care safety most of what he said a while ago, so take a few weeks to witness the debut of Linux 3.0.

Meanwhile you can already do the jokes that are expected in this situation and that Yesterday's news left on a plate.

Feed RSS of the post Google+ Profiles

We show how to create an RSS feed for any Google+ account, so you can read our favorite reader (Google Reader will be many, I guess). It's simple, and in fact, is not concerned to install something, since it is an application hosted on Google App Engine whose name is Google Plus Feed.

To subscribe to the feed of a particular user, you simply have to select your Google+ ID. To get that ID click on the user's name, and the address bar selects only the numbers after the ".com", thus:
https://plus.google.com/??????/posts (just copy the numbers)
Once you have selected the ID you'll have to copy the end of the following address http://plusfeed.appspot.com/, thus:
The new URL will be formed which will have to add to your favorite Feeds RSS reader ,But obviously, it will show only posts public.

Change wallpaper automatically and configure the startup menu in LXDE

The two days with LXDE finished, but I had been a thorn stuck in the affairs that are advertised in the headline of this post and let's move to finalize now, to lay aside this lightweight desktop, at least for now.

The first point many people may seem silly, to me, that in 2011 you have to go full manually changing wallpaper seems very dodgy. There are programs to deal with these things, of course, but in an attempt to preserve the most stark minimalism and expenditure of resources LXDE ,It is best to leave for a script.

The best I found was the posted by a user in Linux Mint Forums distribution, as you can see below:

RANGE=`ls -1 "$DIR"/*.jpg | wc | awk '// {print $1}'`

while [ 1 -eq 1 ]; do

   while [ "$number" -le $FLOOR ]; do
   let "number %= $RANGE"  # Scales $number down within $RANGE.
   for X in "$DIR"/*.jpg
      if [ $number -eq $COUNTER ]; then
         pcmanfm --set-wallpaper "$X"
   sleep 2m
I copied as such in a plain text editor Leafpad, You change the path of images ("DIR=") to the appropriate (it is also possible to vary the range of changes by changing the number in the "sleep") and you keep the name you wish to extension ".sh" (Without the quotes, for example: rotator.sh). Now we have to do executable file (Right click and Permits) and already with a double click should do its function.

As we are interested not disturb or touch running the file manually to change in wallpaper, you can add to startup programs in "~/.config/autostart/" though, as the author warns script, should kill him when you close or restart the session, Not to continue replicating in memory on successive reboots. There two ways to do.

Finally, in contrast to the previous "frivolity" in work environments where the user is not the computer administrator but merely to use the system to perform specific functions for which it has been set, there Menu items leftover LXDE applications in many cases.

It is at least hide the menu options such as installing software or access to administrative tools, and to do this you must edit the file (so that Linux everything is a file ...).

Now, goodbye LXDE, we will follow the trail

Create a user name for Google+ with Toplus

As you know, Google+ URL's for each user profile are horrible: a series of huge numbers extremely long and no one would learn. The truth is I do not know why this is so, but for now we just save a link to the not to miss while being easier to obtain.

I commented that this can be fixed using gplus.to, A service that allows you to get a user name to translate the URL to something much simpler with your personal name or nickname you use on the Internet.

Now has come another service that does the same and is called Toplus. To use one must choose a username and find the number of our profile. To find out just look at the series of numbers to then address plus.google.com/ and ready. The picture above shows where you can find it.

From here you create a new address you can put any other browser and get to your Google+ profile. Make it clear that people Google has said that we should not use these services because it is a feature that will soon become the new social network is only a matter of patience, but if you do not have it, Toplus is another option you can use.

BlockPlus: removes notifications from Google+ to increase productivity [Google Plus]

Google+ is increasingly filled with people. In just 15 days has reached 10 million users ,This is totally amazing. Now the invitations seem to be permanently open.

I have an account on this social network and I can download the products in large quantities, especially because the area of notifications appear in all views of Google services and for people like me who use Google Calendar, Gmail, browser and many Moreover, it seems that you pursue.

To hide these notices can install an extension of Chrome called BlockPlus that only makes this ,removes the box red/orange color that appears beside your name when you are in session and so Google will not see what is happening in Google Plus while you're busy elsewhere.

The extension works in the back and has no options. Anytime you go back notifications just have to disable it and if you want to save some work you can install this extension that allows you to do this faster.

Install BlockPlus.

In Google+ you are the owner of your photos and content ,Facebook does not

Now it is fashionable to compare Google+ and Facebook here we bring more and another comparison is that the terms and conditions of use of each of the services, we may note a difference that many people care and others do not care.

In Facebook you are the owner of your photos, videos and content, but Facebook can use them without asking permission for what they want, because by uploading them to Facebook lose the rights to the content.

In contrast, in Google+ you are the owner of the content, photos, videos, etc.. and they will not use your content or have rights to it.

One more reason to use Google+.

Caution: "Google+Tweet" may contain malicious code [Malware]

It had to happen, the social network has become the target of many people, some see it as a platform to communicate, share photos, videos, news and more interesting, however, there are others who see it as the target for infect good or bad way. Yes, good way, at the end of the story, also end up affecting us.

There are many applications and codes that have been launched recently to modify and add new forms of share the contents of Google Plus in other social networks. The truth is that I really liked and I have been using since the sharing come. However, one did not like but that is quite useful, is the complement to have Google+ (Google Plus) from Firefox (The browser where it detects the malware).

This supplement contains malicious code that modified without permission, and navigation bar. The truth is not to be alarmed, but it is certainly to be taken into consideration. The application comes from the same creator "Google+Facebook" (Which incidentally has not caused me any problems so far).

In Firefox detected a couple of "threats" so I recommend having extreme caution if installed. Right now I'm getting to review the other supplements, any information you can provide comments and leave her and we echo everything related to Google Plus.

How to install Internet Explorer from Ubuntu

While Internet Explorer not the best browser in the world, let alone when it comes to its version number 6, in some development environments will need to be installed. Since it will require testing, Especially when our client is a large company which would cost a lot of money moving to a new version.

No matter what the reason, then leave them the easiest way I found to have IE6, IE7 or IE8 installed on Linux. In my case settled IE8 in Ubuntu 10.10, Being functional and uncomplicated. Let the steps:

First add the PPA Wine our repository:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
Then Wine install packages and winetricks
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine1.2 winetricks
They sent for winetricks saying we want to install IE6, 7 or 8
winetricks ie6
After installation, Explorer started running with Wine
wine iexplorer
Ready, in theory already have IE on your Linux distribution.

How to update your Facebook status from Google+ without using an extension

There are plenty of tools to use Google+ and make it out of him too. Now we show an extension that takes the contents of Facebook and put into Google+ for you to review all in one place. They also show how to export your Facebook friends to G+.

Now I'll show you how you can update your Facebook status while in Google+ and you will not need to install anything. The first thing to do is go to: https://www.facebook.com/mobile/ and then look for a box that says "Load-mail." There you will see an address e-mail you should copy and save and use to this process.

This mail is unique for each user, so you can only use it to update your account. Then go to https://plus.google.com/circles and creates a new circle. To do this look at the bottom where all the circles that you have on the left lets you create a new one. Put the name "Facebook" when you exit the new window. There also press "Add a new person" and type in the mail we collect on the top.

After hitting the mail press ENTER to add it and give it a name, I asked a mandatory basis. Save the information and go to write an update in the main part of G+. Click on "Your circles" and choose the one you have created Facebook.

Write what you want and send. You say that this contact is not in Google+, say that you understand and continue to share. For me it worked perfectly and was very quick. He immediately went to Facebook and he had the state had set.

The only bad thing is that, unfortunately, only type 50 characters in the state but this is the fault of Facebook just take what the subject of the mail has to update the status. Mal Facebook.

How to export Facebook events to Google Calendar

Facebook events are one of the few things I like about this social network. With them I find everything that is happening in my city, which possibly would not have it any other way because I do not read the newspaper, do not watch television nor listen to regional radio. So I can only the Internet to see what is happening.

As a happy user of Google would prefer to have everything in Google Calendar to notify me through my computer, mail from Gmail and even in the my Android phone calendar that synchronizes always. The less into Facebook, the better for me.

We can do this very easily with an extension called Chrome Add Facebook Events to Google Calendar ,That it does is add a link to a Facebook event side that says "Add to Calendar" ,And export date, event name, location and everything about this to your Google Calendar account.

The picture above shows where the link and you'll see in any event that will visit from Chrome. It is too simple to use and then if you want to edit something from Google Calendar you can do to remove or add something.

Install Add Facebook Events to Google Calendar.

Move2Picasa: backup your Facebook photos to Picasa

With the launch of Google's social network (Google Plus) have changed the game completely. Google services have been further improved so that, finally, we completed certain migrate for social networks.

Regrettably not official (And I doubt if it happens Google, Facebook allows), but the beginning. With Move2Picasa, An online service, we will be able to move all our photos stored on Facebook to Picasa (or Google Photos as will be called).

The beauty of doing this is that in addition to easily share your images on Google Plus, we have supported in the Google services. I'm not belittling Facebook, but out of conviction and experience, I prefer to commit more.

The way to migrate from one service to another is automatic and easy. If we turn to Move2Picasa Web let's see what we are asked to log in with Facebook, after this we give the necessary permissions, to now, Picasa and start copying through every picture we have in Facebook.

Android: Voice to text as the input method

Well, it 's not to much will happen because they will have another version of Android, and mobile or who knows. Anyway, I recently acquired a new mobile with Android and one of my problems is I have some "dedacos" like sausages, so typing messages using the keyboard that appears by default I am a "sick" complicated. I saw some videos on the possibility of using the keyboard, a microphone icon, so to use it, then activates the voice recorder, record the message text you want to use and the engine automatically turns your voice into text . What is very comfortable to quickly make a note, SMS or text chat without typing word for word go.

At the end achieve my purpose, and as a certain person asked me what steps had to give, in the end I said, Wow! because as I write I have a blog that you might use more people. So here goes:

1) First is to have installed the voice search for Google, it usually comes already installed on all phones, but is not the case, there is no major problem, are going to Android market and you download "Google Voice Search" (or similar), install and go.
To verify that it works for you, use the map application for example, and next to the text box where you indicate the places, you should see an icon of a microphone. If you click on it, then leave you to dictate the place with your own voice and translates it to text you.

2) Now the issue is to change the keyboard to use, to use a keyboard to give you the ability to dictate text by voice. I used the following: Keyboard from Gingerbread it is for Android version 2.3 or higher. The keyboard even more than I like the default keyboard, has some dark colors, and buttons a bit larger for easy text entry, a matter of proving it.

Well, download it, install it and now select "Settings" from your mobile to be the default keyboard. To do this go to Settings> Language and Keyboard and select the new entry should appear: Gingerbread Keyboard

Good and needed less, but the important point is that you can "despair" because when you try to get a new text, say, Wow! but still appears above the keyboard. I do not see the new keyboard. Okay, easy. You have to go to a browser, application notes, chat or similar where a box appears that is the input you use to put text. If you tip the box shows the keyboard, you have to do is keep clicking on the text box and then a little menu appears. In this pop-up menu and allows you to select the keyboard you want to use in this menu use "Gingerbread" and ready. Automatically and the new keyboard should Apparate.

3) You can then use the microphone icon appears at the bottom and activate the recorder will record your voice to later convert automatically to text of unexpected long lost typing.

How to export your Facebook friends to Google + [Google Plus]

Google + was launched, and although many are on the lookout that can run with the same sort of Google Wave ,And thousands of people who are using social network of the great "G". It is too early to say whether it will succeed or not, but the interesting thing is that is here and it is best to try.

If you were the lucky ones to be invited by Google or some kind soul to the new service will have noticed that only allows you to find friends from Hotmail and Yahoo, so that restricted access to other networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

However, an alternative for those who want to lead and have the same contacts on Facebook and Google +, here is a solution.

The shape of import your Facebook friends to Google + is through an extension we knew for some time called Facebook Friend Exporter with which we will add a new option on Facebook.

After installing the extension, we went to Facebook and visualize "Export Friends" (reference picture above) at the top right, let's start clicking to select the number of friends we want to export.

With this extension we're just adding our Facebook friends as contacts from Gmail, which automatically makes suggestions in the section of Google +, after appearing here simply select the circle and add a new contact.

Note: Invitations are disabled by the large number of people using the service, however, is good to have this tip is for when they become available.

Use the Windows button in Ubuntu

From console, run this command:
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu --type string "Super_L"
Tested successfully on Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 (without unity) and Mint 11

New Gmail interface + Tips on how to activate

These days Google is gaining attention, especially Google + ,But also to redesign many of its services. Today it was the turn of Gmail ,As shown on his official blog a preview of what will be the Gmail's new interface.

I really liked this new interface, because they make better use of screen space, is less advertising, and is a combination of colors muya gradable. Also, when we scroll down just a stick is superior to action buttons most used in managing the mails.

Activate Gmail's new interface
Go to the top right-wing configuration and choose the Mail Setup. Then go to the Themes tab (or enter directly from this link) And the final will see two new items: Preview (give), and Preview. Select either and are automatically activate the new theme of Gmail.

The difference between the normal and dense matter is that the dense is a bit more compact and makes better use, but if you want something cleaner using the common theme.
