Tiling windows in Ubuntu 10.04

As we saw windows are tiling windows managers that automatically fit windows occupying entire screen. In KDE 4.5 was very simple Gnome theme but we have to use one of several programs is to achieve this effect such as x-tile, xmonad and others.

This time we'll talk about Bluetile is based manager xmonad. It has feature that you do not have to log in again but simply run Bluetile within session in which you are so that you can use.

Install it usually is not easy but thanks to guys now have a repository webudp8 to install simply by typing following commands in console:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install bluetile
After installing simply have to do Alt+F2 and type "Bluetile" and you will have desktop When used with automatic organization and mosaic windows, so:

NOTE : this only works on Ubuntu Lucid

Activate tiling function in KDE 4.5

The tiling windows is something I've been in love. These environments where each fits one window and use all space on screen. While there are several environments that are ready for use as dwm, also you can reach this function in other settings, in this case explain how to get it in KDE 4.5

It's simple, go to following menus:

System Settings> Window Behavior> Window Behavior> Advanced> Enable Tiling

Firefox 4 Beta 4 with synchronization preferences and tabs

The Mozilla Foundation staff continue working hard in order to meet launch schedule of next version of Firefox. Today was released over a Beta version of browser - fourth so far - with confirmation of news very interesting. Especially for those who do not use Chrome, which already has most of them.

Among novelties, a new way to synchronize adjustments made in browser. If you want to have same settings of Firefox on your home computer, work on desktop and laptop that carries to class, this extension can be killer. Developed by Firefox team, it offers synchronization with a first-line security.

That is, all bookmarks, browsing history, the configuration of address bar, as well as usernames and password, everything will be synchronized among various devices. Anywhere, Firefox will have same face and same resources. Even same tabs that were open.

To use Firefox Sync will require, at least for now, install a separate plugin.

Already Tab Candy, a different way of organizing tabs allow to group them by task to be performed or subject of tab, finally got a final name: Panorama. This means that Firefox is about to be launched in April, because its most interesting features are already baptized with final name.

The performance of this beta, only one thing to say, slow. He even hangs my computer.

Google Docs Edit documents directly on Linux

One of advantages of Linux is that every now and then appear simple tools and solutions for problems you never knew you had. For example, editing a file in Google Docs: You can opt for direct publishing on web interface, which limits a little editing file, or use an offline editor (like gedit or OpenOffice) and then have all the work of export file saved to GDocs.

It is a matter of choice, but it would be interesting if we could access documents directly from Nautilus GDocs and can edit them in program of choice, with automatic upgrade to your account in Google Docs?

And that is exactly what gdocs-mount does. When installing program and enter your Google login, program creates a new "partition" on your Linux, which is nothing more than your Docs folder. Thus, you can create, delete and edit documents locally using OpenOffice or any other program you want.

Cool, but how does magic?

First, we must add a repository to apt and install a single package. If you are deathly afraid of terminal can use Synaptic, but believe me, is much simpler by terminal. Just type two commands below, stating root password when required:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:doctormo/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gdocs-mount-gtk

If you keep your system already installed, the whole process should take about two minutes. Once installed, go to menu Applications> Accessories> Google Docs Connection. The program will ask for your Google login:

Once completed, a new icon will appear on your desktop, showing that partition's mount was successful:

When you open folder, we have all files GDocs available:

Then just use like a normal system folder. When you save file - be it a text document, a presentation or a spreadsheet - program will automatically synchronize with Gocs. So, if you want, you can continue editing file normally on another computer.

Version of Gnash promises to run all videos from YouTube

The project Gnash, a free Flash Player developed by GNU just got to version 0.8.8, and now developers say software runs perfectly 100% of videos on YouTube without problems or catch sound.

"But for what I'll install a Flash Player different if Adobe has already created a version for Linux?", You must be wondering. Gnash is totally free, meaning you can download source code, make changes, join project and include functions that do not exist in official player (and, face it, is very weak). So you can keep your Linux installation 100% free while browsing sites that have Flash content.

Another advantage is that you can also use Gnash as a single player or with a plugin in browsers. The Firefox and Chrome already have plugins for Gnash, working properly with them.

Besides greater compatibility, Gnash brings other news:

  • Switch between Cairo and OpenGL and AGG renderers
  • Switching between FFmpeg and Gstreamer as media manipulators
  • Support for ActionScript.
You can download and compile Gnash source if you want, but there are binaries for various distributions. In Ubuntu, just use following commands in Terminal:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnash/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnash

Install KDE 4.5 in Ubuntu/Kubuntu 10.04

I recently came out of KDE SC 4.5 version with these developments:
  • Major changes in notification area. Monochromatic icons are now used to provide visual clarity and redesigned pop-up notifications.
  • The window manager Kwin now supports Tilling mode, allowing to organize windows on desktop without overlapping. Besides, now you can move windows by dragging a blank area of same (currently only works with applications Qt/KDE).
  • The old interface for managing "activities" has been completely replaced by a "manager activities", similar to dialogue to add components.
  • The workspace Plasma Netbook has also received significant improvements, especially in terms of performance.
  • WebKit, the rendering engine used by Safari and Google Chrome (among others) has been fully integrated into KDE SC and it is possible to use web browser instead of Konqueror KHTML (which, however, remains default engine .)
  • For first time includes a large application written entirely in Python. Kajongg game is a version four-player of classic Mahjong.
  • The application of virtual globe can now plan routes Marble and download all data from a map for reference later without an Internet connection.
  • It improves Phonon multimedia system integration with Pulseaudio.

This time it introduced fewer new features than other versions, since focus was centered on improving what already existed. The general opinion of developers is that with this version of KDE SC finally reached maturity and stability of mythical KDE 3.5.

To update KDE in Kubuntu write following commands at console, each separately:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
To install KDE in Ubuntu . A simple command:

  • sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Where to download images. VDI to use in Virtualbox

Virtualbox is perhaps most famous existing virtualization software.

Thanks to him, you can try operating systems within your own system, for example, people who use Windows and have virtualized a Linux distro. Or vice versa.

To install an operating system you can download an image virtualbox. Iso and burn to a CD or DVD or you can be. Iso saved, but perhaps one of best ways is to have an image. VDI.
There are many places where you can go to download one you are interested.

One of these sites is, there you have images. VDI of many systems.

You can also visit or to download them.

Once you locate file, you save it to your computer and then open your Virtualbox.

The first is "Add a new virtual machine" as you normally would, but in next step when you come to "virtual hard drive, you must select" existing "and open virtual hard disk manager Virtualbox.

At this point, you add file. VDI that you downloaded.

Now you can start your newly created virtual machine and you have your operating system already installed.

Android 3.2 Honeycomb will continue to Android Gingerbread

Android mobile operating system from Google is released, and when not out yet version 3.1, to be called Gingerbread, we already know name of version 3.2.

Apparently, the version that will follow "Gingerbread" will be released later this year, called Honeycomb, "Honeycomb" and "Beehive"

Even when it is starting to digest newly released Android 2.2 or Froy, included on smartphones Droid 2 and HTC Evo 4G, there are multiple sources that are already talking about new version.

We did not go unnoticed always sweet names using Google for their versions of Android, which previously called Cupcake, Donut, Eclair and Froy.

It is likely, Honeycomb, no more than an incremental update as of Froy was Eclair, but Google goes fast on updates that always wants to keep latest mobile operating system.

This is why it is not expected that Honeycomb is an approach to Android 4 but closer to 3.1.

For now, the closest is Gingerbread, which will be with us for next Christmas and will bring dramatic improvements in user interface, based on some of recent hires of Google, but the company does not want to reveal too many details.

Debian complete 17 years

And now his most famous distribution is Ubuntu, which is gaining more popularity every day.

Ubuntu 10.10 will feature multi-touch

New for fans of Ubuntu: from version 10.10, system will support multi-touch, allowing developers to create interfaces with support for ringtones and screen movements and presenting a whole new method of navigation for users.

Right at launch of distro, many applications will already have GTK support enabling touch, among other things, lateral or horizontal scroll directly on screen of equipment. And for Ubuntu Netbook Edition, will have an interface with support for Unity touch.

Mark Shuttleworth, in a statement on his blog, explains more about novelty, stressing that to take full advantage of technology you need equipment to support movements of four or more fingers. Mark also talks about the possibility of a version 11.04 of Ubuntu already come with most common software applications such as browsers, file manager, photos and media and supports multi-touch. Can you imagine, control effects of Compiz directly touching screen?

If you already have a device with support for touch and want to test, just add a repository to Ubuntu:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:utouch-team/utouch
  • sudo apt-get update
Recalling that package utouch is still in beta, and likely many programs will not support news yet.

Google surrenders with Wave

Google has announced on his blog, which will paralyze development of Wave.

Platform, presented last year in the I/O, which at first was at express invitation, has not proved how Google expected.

Perhaps too ambitious for time they appeared and too complicated for what users were accustomed.

Just as Buzz, Google also, it looked to stagnate and has followed a line up of users and usage, Wave initially looked like it would be something really important and became snake biting its tail.

Users will soon adapt and many stopped using it, and by failing to many users, few that still used it, I parked too.

There will be something sudden closure of Wave, Google plans to work until end of this year.

Google Wave, an application for communication and collaboration in real time, with ability to arrasatrar and drop files from desktop, was applauded in presentation as something really innovative, but was out of time. And for when user was ready , say I had a lot more tasty options.

All central art of code and protocols are open source so that other developers can use.

And this is how Google says goodbye to Wave, proud of development team and looking for new projects to come.

11 Options to optimize images in Linux

With passage of time and many theme changes I made in my various blogs I've noticed that are 3 things that make a site load slow: poor hosting some javascript scripts and images that are very heavy.

The first 2 are easiest solution (a good hosting and godaddy and remove unneeded scripts.) But deal with images sometimes do not do it for simple laziness, or may not know program that does it or because there are many images that we have to try. Then I want to show you several options to reduce and optimize images in linux. So look for tool that best suits their tastes and alleviate a bit web

PunyPng ( It is an online option, perhaps best of them, one simply upload an image and optimized site allows lower it with less weight. The disadvantage is that it can sometimes take a long time to upload an image if our connection is very slow or if picture is very heavy.

Mogrify. It is a command line utility (must install imageshack since repositories) and reduces weight of an image like this:
  • mogrify -quality 75 imagen.jpg
Or so many in a directory:
  • mogrify -quality 75 *.jpg
Trimage. It is a graphics option, can reduce one or more pictures by simply dragging images to program window and some evidence has fallen to 40% by weight of images.

OptiPNG. It is another utility to command line (you must install from repositories) but it is easier to use, it's almost easier to use than a graphical interface because only parameter you need is name of image, so:
  • optipng imagen.png
And we get optimized image. The reduction in size is usually not much but program ensures that no loss of quality in image.

Pngnq pngcrush Pngquant. Are most useful for console, all available for installation from repositories, reduce images a little more than OptiPNG but loss of quality is higher. Let's see how they are used:
  • pngcrush imagen.png imagenligera.png
So pngcrush destination image source image
  • pngnq imagen.png
No science, program does not overwrite image but to create a new and added some extension to distinguish it.
  • pngquant 256 imagen.png
The number you see there is number of colors in image. The lower number of colors lower weight and lower image quality too.

Shrink O'Matic. An application in AIR that allows you to optimize images JPG's, PNG's and GIF's. Useful for those who want graphical interface and not bothered to install AIR. Download here.

Gimp Plugin. This was long most popular methods for optimizing images. It is a simple plugin that adds option of "Save for Web" or "Save for the web" to GIMP. To install it should only download this deb.

Gimp without plugin. Maybe best way to optimize images yet which requires more time is to use GIMP and learn what kind of extension use some saving options and crop and resize image.

WordPress Plugin. And it would be more comfortable than having to do anything to optimize images? Well, this plugin can be achieved. It's called WP Smush. What plugin is that each image being loaded on his blog passes before adding to post. Excellent right? You have an option to optimize previous images or images that we have already on blog before using plugin.

Canonical might want to buy openSUSE (rumor)

We woke up today with news that if it be true would be quite a hit.

According to one rumor, Canonical, was thinking of buying openSUSE.

Apparently, a developer of Canonical, is one who made comment, but has not been able to confirm the news.

Novell, what is known is openSUSE still for sale and may even sell it in parts.

Recently, Novell, Jos Poortvliet hired to lead openSUSE community, and an already existing strategy for KDE distro of chameleon, which claims to have made two quarters Reset this way.

Time will tell if news was finally confirmed by either party.

Google docs from nautilus

I found an excellent entry where we can see how to assemble documents google docs in a unit as if it were another disk but with only our documents google docs.

I found it excellent because I really hate google file manager, is more comfortable to have it in a file full with icons

The application that will allow us to do this is Google Doc Mount, we will install Ubuntu Lucid typing following commands in a console:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:doctormo/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo aptitude install gdocs-mount-gtk
Then we go to Applications-> Accessories-> Google Docs Data Connection, and enter our Google account and within seconds see documents in Nautilus.
