linux-696x424

Three news in a single article, yet another chapter of my personal Linux release roundup . As the title we speak of the Bash 5.0 (the RC1 was released), of VLC, which has exceeded 3 billion downloads, and the first point release of Linux 4.20 .

Bash 5.0
2019 is the year of the 5: after the announcement of Linux 5.0 is available for a few days the release candidate of the new Bash 5.0. Bash (acronym for bourne again shell) is the most used textual shell in the world. It is used in Unix and Unix-like operating systems, especially in GNU/Linux and macOS. This new release introduces a myriad of (very technical) fixes compared to version 4.4 as well as several new features and improvements to comply with POSIX specifications.

Among the innovations: it is now possible to remove entire groups of entries from the history, have been inserted several new variables including EPOCHREALTIME that contains the timestamp, this time with the milliseconds.

The number of changes currently implemented, at the time of writing, is 9654: unthinkable to report all of them. Therefore I refer you to the official documentation.

VLC: reached 3 billion downloads (!)

VLC Media Player , app developed by VideoLAN recently reached version 3.0.5 , has reached 3 billion downloads from the official website.

It is probably the most popular cross-platform multimedia playback application available so far, used by millions of users all over the world on all major platforms, including GNU / Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, Chrome OS and even Windows Phone. OS. And the numbers confirm the popularity achieved.

Only from the official website VLC has reached 3 billion unique downloads from a few days ago. Then if we consider all the third-party sites that distribute software. This number also does not take into account downloads from GNU/Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome OS and Windows Phone since most of the downloads for these platforms is done through the app store . Quota a billion had been reached in 2012, 2 billion in 2016, it took just over two years to reach 3 billion, a sign that the use of VLC is constantly growing.

In addition, for a few hours, the sixth point release of VLC 3.0 'Vetinari' was announced . VLC 3.0.6 introduces support for AV1 decoding, adds support for HDR to AV1 and fixes various bugs that have emerged in the last 10 days. VideoLAN has also announced that it is working to implement the AirPlay support in the Android version in order to allow streaming from the smartphone to the APPLE TVs.

Linux 4.20: here is the first point release
Two weeks after the launch of Linux 4.20, which I told you about here , Greg Kroah-Hartman released Linux 4.20.1 making this kernel officially stable (and no longer mainline).

This point release introduces changes to 187 files (1790 insertions and 872 deletions). If you have already installed the 4.20 kernel, upgrading to version 4.20.1 is highly recommended. If you are using an LTS version, you can also avoid updating. Find more details in the official announcement.
