VLC 3.0.5, fifth point release for "Vetinari" is available

vlc-696x391.png

A new version of the VLC media player has been released and, believe it or not, it is already available on Ubuntu. It is nothing astonishing but it is the fifth update since the arrival of VLC 3.0 Vetinari.

In the months following the arrival of Vetinari, the developers focused on fixing bugs and releasing a point release from time to time. Important security updates have been introduced, particularly for third-party libraries. There are also performance improvements and (I'll mention it for the record) better compatibility with macOS 10.14 "Mojave".

Here is a summary of the news:

  • Present a new AV1 decoder based on the dav1d library;
  • Improved Blu-ray playback, as well as access to the menu and search
  • The default libaom decoder is now used
  • Improvements for MP4, MKV, CAF and AV1
  • Enhance support for HDR, tone-mapping and Youtube
  • Support for Chromecast
  • Fixed a problem related to rendering subtitles

The official website of VLC offers a complete change-log that you can consult here if you want more details on the improvements introduced.

Install VLC 3.0.5 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (or higher)
It is easy to install VLC 3.0.5 on Ubuntu if you are using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS or higher thanks to the Snap store.

Alternatively there is the good old terminal:
sudo snap install vlc
If you do not like Snap, do not worry, the update will come soon in the official repositories and then you will be notified by the Software Updater (unless you have disabled the notifications ...).

PS: I take this opportunity to wish all readers a happy 2019, happy new year!

NetBeans 10 with support for JDK 11 is available

NetBeans.jpg

Apache Foundation announced the availability of NetBeans 10.0 , the latest version of the well-known free software IDE that stands out above all for being very competent for web development , covering PHP, Java, JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3, including frameworks such as Zend, Struts and Symphony. and Smarty and Twig templates.

The first thing that stands out Apache NetBeans 10 is the support for JDK 11 . Being able to work with the latest version of Java should have become something important for the application that concerns us, since Oracle has decided to accelerate its rate of releases. On the other hand, we must bear in mind that Java 11 is LTS, so its compatibility by IDE and other applications gain priority. In regards to NetBeans 10, we have integration with the nb-javac project, adding support for JDK 11; the COBRA modules have been eliminated; and support has been added for the dynamic constants of file classes, local variable syntax for lambda parameters, LVTI for lambda parameters and code completion for lambda variable parameters.

Although NetBeans stands out for its proximity to Java-related technologies (in fact, NetBeans itself is built with Java), it's good enough to work with PHP. This time we find that PHP 7.3 has added the possibility of adding final commas in the function calls, the use of list reference assignment and support for the flexible Heredoc and Nowdoc syntax; for PHP 7.2, final commas are now supported in the syntax of the list, colors for object types and the PHP version in the properties of the project created with the IDE; while for PHP 7.1, constant visibility class, handling of multiple capture exceptions, null types, support for keys in "list ()" and coloring for new keywords ("void", "iterable") have been added.

JUnit 5.3.1 has been added as a new NetBeans library , so it can be added easily and quickly to projects managed with the IDE. For Maven projects without existing tests, 5 will be the version of JUnit used by default. The "@Testable" annotation of JUnit 5 has been supported and the default test template is now provided by default, although it is important to keep in mind that the Jupiter engine is not currently supported.

NetBeans is a very veteran and high quality project, however, in recent years has been quite stagnant under the domains of Oracle . We will see if Apache Foundation is able to relaunch a product that apparently has lost enough in the face of the greater push of some code editors such as Visual Studio Code and Atom .

NetBeans 10 can be downloaded from the official website  and to use it it would be highly recommended to install the JDK ( defult-jdk or openjdk-11-jdk in Ubuntu and java-11-openjdk-devel in Fedora and openSUSE). It is completely free and since it is under the Apache domains it uses the Apache License 2.0 license .

Available Ruby 2.6 with JIT compiler in experimental phase

Ruby

It seems that Santa Claus remembered from the programmers, Ruby 2.6.0 was announced , the latest version of the official implementation of one of the most popular programming languages in the world , despite possibly not having much prominence in the media such as Java and JavaScript (the last two have no relationship despite the similarity of the name).

The first thing highlighted by the Ruby managers of version 2.6 is the experimental support for the Just-In-Time compiler (JIT) , which should help improve performance (up to 1.7 times faster than Ruby 2.5). of the programs made with this language. Basically, it is responsible for "writing the C code on the disk and generating a C compiler to generate the native code" . To enable it, you only have to specify "-jit" (without the quotes) in the command line or in the environment variable "$ RUBYOPT. "The JIT compiler is supported when Ruby is compiled with GCC, Clang or Microsoft VC ++."

The other outstanding experimental feature has been "RubyVM :: AbstractSyntaxTree" . "This module has a 'parse' method, which analyzes the string given as Ruby code and returns the AST nodes (Abstract Syntax Tree) of the code" . The class "RubyVM :: AbstractSyntaxTree :: Node" has also been introduced to have the location of the source and the child nodes from the "Node" objects. Being an experimental feature, it is advisable not to use it in production, like the JIT compiler.

Other changes and introduced characteristics are the use of "then" as alias of "yield_self", the names of the constants can now start with a capital letter that is not ASCII , the introduction of unlimited ranges and the addition of "Enumerable#chain" And "Enumerator#+", from the function composition operators "<<" and ">>" to "Proc" and "Method", the "Binding#source_location" method to return the source location of a binding and the option "exception:" in "Kernel # system". Those who want to know all the details of Ruby 2.6.0 can consult the corresponding entry on the official website of this language.

Ruby is a simple language that can come well for those who want to start in the world of programming (like Lua ), since its syntax is simple and allows you to do the same things in several ways (for example, the parentheses in the parameters of the methods are optional). On the other hand, it is the technology with which the Ruby on Rails web application framework is built , from which installation tutorial you can extract the steps to install Ruby 2.6.0 using rbenv.

How to check if your photos were compromised in another Facebook security error

Facebook

A security breach in Facebook last weekend compromised the privacy of 6.8 million users, by revealing  private photographs that had not been publicly shared  on the social network.

The  software flaw  affected millions of users who used Facebook's login to grant permission to third-party applications and access photos. Facebook spoke of 1,500 applications and 876 developers affected by a case that occurred during twelve days between September 13 and 25.

The error was rectified and Facebook promised  "tools for application developers that would allow them to determine which people who use their application were affected by this error" in addition to working with the developers to "delete the photos of the affected users".

The social network has enabled a tool to check if the user's data has been compromised in any way. Automatically it will be shown in a box if the account has been potentially affected by any of the third party applications involved and in that case, it will indicate the steps that the user can follow to protect his account.

Horrible year for Facebook security
The Cambridge Analytica scandal  , in which the consultant had unauthorized access to data and private information of up to 87 million users, was followed by  a more recent hack  that became the  most serious security error in the company's history. , compromising the personal information of 30 million users.

Another one of the sounded cases  seriously affected the privacy  when the social network  turned security into business by  selling the 2FA telephone numbers provided by the users in order to improve the security of access to Internet services, to send customized advertisements.

Therefore, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU)  recently filed a class action lawsuit  against Facebook in which claims a global compensation of 5,200 million euros for Spanish users of the social network for  misuse of their personal data . The lawsuit has been interposed jointly by the Euroconsumers group, the OCU in Spain and other associations in Belgium (Test-atachts), Italy (Altroconsumo) and Portugal (Deco-Proteste) and may be transcendent if the Commercial Court of Madrid (or another one where Facebook is sued) estimates the misuse of the data.

Last week it has also been known that the European regulator has launched a  "legal consultation"  that could lead to a multibillion fine after receiving multiple reports of data breaches that affect the company. The Irish Data Protection Commission, which oversees Facebook compliance with European legislation because the company's European headquarters is in Dublin, has launched an investigation into the company for failing to protect user privacy.

Under the new data protection regulation GDPR, a fine that could reach up to 4% of Facebook's income or, in other words, 1.600 million dollars  with Facebook's billing data of 2017 , could be imposed.

How to repair and restore applications in Windows 10

Blue-Wallpaper-Windows-10

Repairing and restoring applications in Windows 10 is very simple, thanks to the integrated functions that the new Microsoft operating system brings. In this article we will explain step by step how to do it , and we will see what options we have in case neither of the two processes works.

How to repair and restore applications in Windows 10

  1. The first step is to go to Cortana's search bar and write  "Settings", we  select the first result.
  2. Now we have to go to the  "Applications and Features" section.
  3. Once this is done, we only have to choose the application that we want to repair and enter "Advanced Options".
  4. We will see two available options:  "Repair" and "Re-establish".  The first proceeds to try to fix the application and the second carries out a reset of it. Neither of them affects the data that we have associated with the application.

If none of these two options works and we still have problems with the application we can proceed to remove it and reinstall it. We should not underestimate this solution, since it is practically the equivalent of the classic "turn off and on" of the hardware world, which means that it usually works in many cases.

We remind you that in the "Advanced Options" menu of each application we can also display basic information, such as the application editor, the version and the amount of data you have used, as well as access other interesting functions, such as the to finalize the application and all the processes that are associated with it, which can reduce the consumption of resources, and look for add-ons and downloadable content.

Available Linux 4.20 with STIPB allegedly corrected

Linux-4.6

Linus Torvalds announced yesterday the official and stable availability of Linux 4.20 , the latest version of the kernel that has become one of the most important pillars of computing thanks to the fact that it supports many large infrastructures, especially server.

Linux is a gigantic project at present, with tens of millions of lines of code and covering many different fronts, so in MuyLinux we will try to highlight only the most important. On this occasion and as almost always, there are developments that are of interest to the end user, especially those interested in AMD technology.

The first thing that is worth mentioning is the support for the graphics accelerators included in the Picasso and Raven 2 APU , in addition to having advanced in the support of the future Vega 20 GPUs. It is good to know that apparently you will not have to wait too many months to see the future graphics well supported in Linux. In addition, we also have improvements in the performance of GPUVM in AMDGPU (the free driver for "recent" GPUs of AMD) and acceleration of JPEG in VCN in the APU Raven Ridge if it is combined with Table 18.3 , since the version of the kernel driver used can condition to what extent we can squeeze the stack responsible for the graphic APIs . In CPU we find a very initial support of Zen 2.

On Intel and its IGPs, we find an advancement in the work to support the Ice Lake graphics accelerators (Gen 11) and full PPGTT support for the generations of Ivy Bridge, Haswell and Valleyview processors (the latter is included in models of Atom processors). As regards NVIDIA, obviously through Nouveau, highlights the support for HDMI 2.0 and initial screen support in the NVIDIA Xavier Tegra194 SoC.

As far as the processors are concerned, we have nested virtualization enabled by default in the AMD and Intel processors and a faster context change in IBM POWER9. However, the most important are the corrections introduced in the controversial patch STIBP against Specter v2 , which has been refined to the point of not impacting excess performance after uncovering the catastrophic consequences of its application a month ago.

Another aspect of interest is the file systems, especially EXT4, XFS and BTRFS, which are currently the referents. Of the first two we are only maintenance updates, while for the third have included improvements in performance. Added to this are other improvements that include MDRAID for RAID10 and the performance of FUSE, as well as new features for F2FS.

On peripherals oriented to the end user, we can highlight the vibration support for the control of the Xbox One S and a new driver for the Apple Trackpad 2. Yes, you can use a command of a mainstream console to play on GNU / Linux, so those who are used to your console command can try it on their favorite distribution to see if they have a satisfactory experience.

As we have already said, there are many things introduced and covering all of them in an article is impossible, so we leave a link to the page of Kernel Newbies dedicated to Linux 4.20 for those who want to have all the information with a more friendly disposition.

Nautilus 3.30 arrives (finally) on Ubuntu

ubuntu-news

Nautilus 3.30 arrived on Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo. "What's strange?", You'll be thinking, but it's news. Yes because if you remember well in August I told you about the quarrel (and the related controversy) concerning the binomial Nautilus - Ubuntu.

On board Ubuntu 18.10 (and 18.04) in fact you do not find the latest version of Nautilus , the developers have decided to opt for Nautilus 3.26 . This conservative choice was dictated by the fact that it was preferred to keep the icons on the desktop (a feature that the most recent version of Nautilus does not provide) in order not to bother users less accustomed to news and change.

nautilus-3.30-ubuntu-19.04-696x411

The app has finally been updated, but not because the developers have changed their mind.  Carlos Soriano of Red Hat worked on a desktop icon extension for GNOME Shell. Desktop Icons , this is the name of the extension, has been added to the " Proposed Archive " of Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo and, in the future, after an appropriate period of testing, it will also arrive in the official repo. The icons on the desktop are therefore preserved: hence the decision to update to the latest version of Nautilus.

The extension for now is not installed by default but it will probably be when Disco Dingo will be released (in April). If you are trying out the Ubuntu 19.04 builds you have to install it by hand.

Available Linux Mint 19.1 "Tessa": will be supported until 2023

mint-18.3-696x481

A new version of Linux Mint is officially available. I'm talking about Linux Mint 19.1 "Tessa" , point release of the Mint 19.x series , which introduces a long series of improvements and will be supported until 2023.

Linux Mint 19.1 "Tessa" (Xfce Edition) is based on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and relies on Cinnamon 4.0. Users of Linux Mint 19 can easily update through the Update Manager utility.

Before proceeding with the update, make all system updates (including updates to any third-party applets), create a snapshot using Timeshift and deactivate the screensaver. Then follow the on-screen procedure. If you are asked to keep or replace configuration files, select the option to replace.

Being a major release the list of news could only be full-bodied. Tessa is based on the linux-firmware 1.173.2 and on the Linux kernel 4.15.0-20 .

New look for the Software Sources tool, Xapp sidebar and a new header bar, separated 'Language Settings' and 'Input Methods', present numerous finishes for the Xapp apps. For example, Xreader has a new look for the document viewer while the Xed text editor switches to libpeas, python3 and the MESON build system. Sudo shows asterisks when you are typing a password.

Input lag on NVIDIA cards has been reduced and the windows manager is much more responsive. You can now disable the VSYNC from the settings.

update-manager-mint-19.1-tessa-501x420

The update manager introduces a new button that facilitates the removal of the kernels present in the system but not used.

Tessa's requirements are truly minimal, Mint was and remains a light distribution that you can also install on dated hardware. Requires 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended), 15GB of disk space, and a resolution of 1024 × 768 px.

Linux Mint is one of the favorite destinations for Windows users who want to go to the penguin, especially thanks to its very intuitive approach and a user-friendly user experience. This new version makes the transition from Windows even more fluid and simple. Try it!

For more details, I refer you to the official announcement on the Mint blog .

Run Ubuntu Linux in a Windows 10 Hyper-V session in four steps

UbuntuLinux_Hyper-V_Windows-10

Hyper-V is a hypervisor-based virtualization application that allows  executing any Linux distribution in Windows 10  on machines with an Intel or AMD processor with virtualization technology enabled. In addition to the server versions, Hyper-V is available in the 64-bit client versions of Windows 10, Professional, Enterprise and Education.

A couple of months ago, Canonical created an optimized Ubuntu image for the hypervisor of Microsoft ("Hyper-V Quick Create"), with advantages such  as better integration of the clipboard, dynamic scaling of the desktop, shared folders between host and guest and better experience with the mouse when changing from one to another. And all thanks to the  new implementation of XRDP  preconfigured to run by default right after completing the installation of the system.

Ubuntu Linux in a Hyper-V session in four steps
Of course, there are other ways to install Linux on Windows computers, such as installing both (together, but not scrambled) with dual boot, but the use of virtualization technologies facilitates the task and more if done from a system tool and with The new image optimized for use. If you want to try it, we remind you how to do it in four steps.

1.- Active Hyper-V . The hypervisor is not installed by default in Windows 10, but it is easy to obtain in either of these two ways:

  • Access the PowerShell console as an administrator and run the  Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName command: Microsoft-Hyper-V -All
  • If you do not use Windows consoles, you can also do it in graphic mode. Access the control panel> Programs and features. Click on "Activate or deactivate Windows features". Search and mark Hyper-V to install it.
Ubuntu_in_Windows10_2

2.- Run Hyper-V Quick Creation . It is an application added by Microsoft in Windows 10 (Fall Creators or higher), which allows you to add a virtual machine in a few minutes. Execute it from the start menu:

Ubuntu_in_Windows10_3

3.- Installation of Ubuntu . The ease of this type of applications is maximum and is within the reach of a simple click. You have two ways to get Ubuntu from the same interface:
  • By default, the same application will download the Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS image to the computer.
  • If you have already downloaded an image of Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (64-bit desktop client version) you can select the .ISO file on your local machine.

Ubuntu_in_Windows10_4

4.- Configuration. The management of this installation is similar to what we would do in a virtual machine, editing the hardware we will use and the management features. We can do it in two ways:

  • We manually edit each component (processor, memory, disk space ...) that we will assign to the machine:

Ubuntu_in_Windows10_7

We opted for the automatic mode to connect the machine and configure it later:

Ubuntu_in_Windows10_6

In a medium level team with SSD we completed the whole process in just 4 minutes, including the download of the Ubuntu image, the creation of the virtual machine and the installation of the system.

Ubuntu_in_Windows10_8

This type of solutions is especially for professional areas, especially development, but any user can use it to have Ubuntu in Windows 10.

Available Linux Mint 19.1, news and download

linuxmint19

As expected, when there are only a few days left to celebrate Christmas Clemente Lefebvre has just announced the launch of Linux Mint 19.1 , a new version of the distribution that as usual comes in its three classic editions: Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce .

Linux Mint 19.1 codenamed 'Tesa' is the second major update of this version, based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and with hardly any changes with respect to the base packages of this, including the Linux kernel 4.15 , Table 18 , Python 3, OpenJDK 10 and a support that will extend until 2023. For the rest, the novelties are shared between the desks of each flavor and the improvements that usually share among themselves, mainly applications and administration tools.

On this occasion, however, only Cinnamon receives a new version, while the other two remain with the one they brought in the previous one: MATE 1.20 and Xfce 4.12 , in both cases with many patches and minor updates on top.

Cinnamon 4.0
The highlight of Linux Mint 19.1 is Cinnamon 4.0, a new major version of the desktop with many interesting news. The first, a renewed layout of the panel, which goes from the classic style Windows XP to a more modern with a task manager based on icons, such as Windows 10. However, the user can choose which one to use from the same welcome screen or configure it to your liking later.

Linux_Mint_19.1

If the great novelty of Linux Mint 19 was the incorporation of the utility Timeshift for the restoration of the system, in this premium the aspect of the desk, more modern than ever; but also the performance improvements on all fronts , with special mention for the Nemo file manager , whose code has been optimized for the best performance. In addition, Nemo comes with new options, such as the possibility of assigning view of thumbnails or icons according to the directory (as in KDE Plasma).

Other changes that benefit the three editions include the update manager , which has facilitated the task of (only if you want or need) choose a version of the kernel different from the default, including information about the support of those that are available; a slight redesign of the manager of software sources and the same for desktop themes, which gain in variety (colors) and quality (contrast).

Linux Mint 19.1 also brings the improvements corresponding to the set of default applications that share the flavors of Linux Mint, known as XApps among which are the Xed text editor or the Xreader document viewer, refined for the occasion.

Purism has ready the Librem 5 dev kit, it will be ready for April 2019

Purism in 2017 announced a funding campaign for the creation of a smartphone based on GNU/Linux that respects user privacy. The idea of crowdfunders is to make a smartphone as open as possible that guarantees the privacy of users at a reasonable price (equivalent to 599 US dollars). The crowdfunding campaign was a success and the Librem 5, this is the name of the device, is under development . We have updated periodically about the news emerged on the Librem, which will also support Ubuntu Touch , brought forward by UBports.

librem-5-768x452

The news today is that Purism has ready the dev kit of the Librem 5 that will be ready in the spring of 2019 (late compared to the roadmap that was scheduled to launch for January '19). Delay due to the discovery of two bugs in the CPU (built by NXP) that seriously increase consumption.

The dev kits are based on the i.MX 8M 64-bit ARM board and not on the old i.MX6 on which the old kits were based. These dev kit will be sent to the early adopters who will have to try them, test them and report problems to the developers in order to perfect the product. Clearly this process is fundamental because we are talking about a completely new device and therefore the problems will not be lacking.

"There is still a lot of work to be done to make the development kit really functional to the development of Librem 5, so we need your help, " said Purism. " The frenetic pace of continuous development and the progress we have made since assembling the hardware is incredible, but the path is still long and arduous".

I conclude by informing you that Purism has announced a Christmas bundle, called "It's a Secure Life", it is a discount ranging between 15% and 18% if you buy at least 2 of the following three products: Librem 5 (pre-order), Librem Key, Librem 15 (laptop).

Available LibreOffice 6.1.4: over 125 bugs fixed

libreoffice-696x394.jpg

The Document Foundation announced LibreOffice 6.1.4 , fourth incremental update of the 6.1 series.

LibreOffice 6.1.4 comes a month and a half after version 6.1.3 and goes to fix a myriad of bugs found in various components of the suite, including Writer, Calc, Draw, Impress, Base and Math. However, according to the TDF, it remains a version for early adopters and so it will be until the LibreOffice 6.1 series is considered sufficiently mature (ie stable). 126 changes have been made, you can find them here and here.

"LibreOffice 6.1.4 represents the best we can offer in terms of functionality but is not optimized for implementations in production environments where stability and security come first" these are the words of Italo Vignoli in yesterday's announcement. "Users who want a more mature version can download LibreOffice 6.0.7, on which we have been working for months".

The development of LO 6.1 continues. LibreOffice 6.1.5 will arrive in February 2019 and should introduce another wave of bug-fixing in order to make this version as stable as possible. The last point release will be LibreOffice 6.1.6, waiting for 29 May 2019.

The Document Foundation is already working on the next major release: LibreOffice 6.2.

Linux Release Roundup: WLinux Enterprise, KDE Applications 18.12, Vivaldi 2.2

linux-696x392

So many news condensed into a single article, new chapter of my personal Linux release roundup . As we are talking about WLinux Enterprise , then the new release of KDE Applications and Vivaldi 2.2 .

WLinux Enterprise
WLinux is a distribution published by the developers of Whitewater Foundry on the Microsoft Store of Windows 10 . WLinux is a distro based on Debian and, unlike the others, is specially optimized for the WSL platform , it also allows a quicker patching of bugs and immediate support for most of the graphic apps.

The company has decided to take a step forward and focus on enterprise users with WLinux Enterprise . Whitewater Foundry said that WLinux Enterprise is the most stable and secure GNU/Linux distribution that can be used on Windows 10 .

With WLinux Enterprise, the company targets many industries such as fintech and others that have to meet stringent security and regulatory requirements. The distribution can be purchased on the Microsoft Store for € 4.99. Find more details on the official website.

KDE Applications 18.12

kde-applications-18.12-vivaldi-2.2-Wlinux-enterprise-582x420

KDE has announced the release of KDE Applications 18.12.0 . Over 140 bugs have been corrected in different apps: Kontact Suite, Ark, Cantor, Dolphin, Gwenview, Kate, KmPlot, Konsole, Lokalize, Okular, Spectacle, Umbrella etc.

Introduced some small news: you can see previews of ODF documents in Dolphin and emoticons in Konole, annotate PDFs in Okular (using 'typewriter'). Improved performance for reading files using the SFTP protocol. Find all the details here.

Vivaldi 2.2
A new version of the Vivaldi browser has been released that makes it more customizable than ever before. Vivaldi 2.2 adds several new features: a pop out video player (similar to the picture-in-picture feature present in Chrome), new ways to manage tabs, the ability to control the buttons that appear in the browser toolbar (finally!). Picture-in-picture is activated by clicking on a video (HTML5) with the right mouse button and selecting the picture-in-picture option. Unfortunately, the operation is related only to video in HTML5 and does not work with video in Flash or other formats. Another new feature is Netflix support for Linux users who will now finally be able to watch the main streaming video services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video without any problem. Then introduced the possibility to save groups of tabs opened during the session. It is therefore possible to easily save a set of pages to visit at a later time. To find out all the news, I refer you to the official website .

[GUIDE] Here's how to change Display Manager in Debian, Ubuntu or Mint

When you install a display manager on a GNU/Linux distribution you are asked to choose which one you prefer to set by default. But if then you change your mind? Let's see in this simple guide for newbies how to change this choice and change the set display manager.

The display manager (also known as 'login manager') is software that manages user login and graphical display servers. Let's take a quick look at how to change the display manager, such as switching from / to: GDM or GDM3, LightDM, SDDM or LXDM. The instructions below should work safely on any Ubuntu or Debian based distribution (Mint, elementary OS) and so on.

We change Display Manager in a few simple steps

For our goal we will use a tool made available by debconf, that is dpkg-reconfigure. The tool can be used to reconfigure an already installed package as if it were the first installation. We come to the point. To change the default display manager use the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure some_installed_display_manager
and
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
These commands obviously go well with various display managers (LightDM or GDM3 is indifferent for example). For the old GDM dates gdminstead of gdm3.

In the same way if you have SDDM or LXDM installed, give the following commands:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure sddm
or
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lxdm

Disks is installed by default in many Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint Cinnamon, MATE, Xubuntu and so on. If it is not installed, look for it with your package manager (look for gnome-disk-utility).

For each partition that you set up at startup, Gnome Disks adds an entry to the file  /etc/fstab. If there were no Disks (or similar tools) to mount a disk or partition automatically when the operating system was started, we should add it to the /etc/fstab file  after recovering the disk / partition UUID.

Everything is easier with Disks. Open it from your applications menu. Choose the hard disk from the Disks sidebar on the left, select the partition you want to mount at startup and then click on the toothed wheels -> Edit Mount Options.

Toggle up User Session Defaults (may be called Automatic Mount Options on older versions) to enable the options below. Make sure it Mount at system startup is enabled. You can enter a name below Display Name. Set up settings should be okay for most of you. Dates OK:

To test the changes, restart the system.

Mozilla responds to Google: Firefox 64 available

firefox-e1544723292204-696x438

Days of ferment for the browsers. Microsoft , after many rumors, has confirmed that Edge will be reborn and will be based on Chromium , the open-source browser created by Google and from which Chrome is derived . The Redmond house wants to " make significant contributions to the Chromium project, in a way that not only makes Microsoft Edge - but also other browsers - better on both PC and other devices" . With Edge, in fact, out of the games the scepter contends Chrome and Firefox. Google for a week has launched Chrome 71. Mozilla for its part announced Firefox 64.

firefox_64-696x298

Let's summarize the main new features introduced in Firefox 64 which is roll-out for all supported platforms, including GNU/Linux and Android systems .

A first change concerns the management of the cards. It is now possible to move the tabs by holding down the CTRL key on one or more of them. You can group and then close a series of tabs. Or add them in groups to bookmarks. It also changes "Activity management" which shows you the consumption of each card. I remind you that Task Manager can be reached by typing about: performance in the address bar.

A new system of proactive suggestions has been introduced called CFR (Contextual feature Recommender). CFR actually allows you to discover new add-ons (extensions) based on your personal web browsing . If you do not like this thing you can disable it by giving ALT , Tools, Options then scroll through the settings in the General tab and uncheck the box in Suggest extensions when browsing .

The about: crashes page has been made clearer, deprecated support for TLS certificates issued by Symantec. With Firefox 64 it was decided to proceed with the removal of Live Bookmarks and support for RSS and Atom feeds. This release fixes several bugs, more details here and here .

Last but not least: Mozilla talks about performance improvements on Linux with this version 64.

[GUIDE]: how to change the boot order with Grub customizer

linux-pengiun

Most of you know how important it is to modify the boot order GRUB as desired so that one can set a particular operating system to be the default operating system if there is more than one operating system installed on the computer (Windows and Linux for example) or those who have more than one distribution of Linux distributions.

To make it easier for you, so you do not have to deal with configuration files (such as /etc/default/grub), There is the Grub Customizer, a simple graphical user interface (gtk), which will allow you to configure the latest version of the GNU boot loader (GRUB 2).

Including Debian and Fedora Grub Customizer can be installed from multiple repositories of GNU/Linux distributions. In Ubuntu, from 19.04 we can find a Grub Customizer in the repositories, and in the case of older versions, a third-party PPA can be used.

Briefly :
Debian sid, buster or stretch:
sudo apt install grub-customizer
Fedora:
sudo dnf install grub-customizer
Ubuntu 19.04:
sudo apt install grub-customizer
Ubuntu 18.10, 18.04, 16.04 and 14.04/Linux Mint 19, 18 and 17:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizersudo apt updatesudo apt install grub-customizer
For other distributions you can search for Grub Customizer in your package manager or read the instructions to compile the source code.
