[HELP] HOW TO CHANGE DEFAULT APPLICATIONS IN UBUNTU

default-applications-ubuntu

In short: In this guide, geared to new users of Ubuntu, I will explain how to change the default applications.

Install, for example,  VLC media player is, for me, one of the first things to do after installing Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus . Then it imposed VLC to make it the default application, as' doing every time I open a video it will start with my favorite media player.

A new Ubuntu user must be able to set all the applications you prefer to open files, this tutorial will explain 'how to proceed.

Change the default app in Ubuntu

The two methods that I will show you 'later are valid on Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and, of course, on Ubuntu 16.04. You can follow one of two paths:

  1. system settings
  2. right click menu

1) System settings

Go to the Unity Dash and search your system settings ' System Settings ':

System_Settings_Ubuntu-foto1

Once in System Settings , click on 'Details option':

System-settings-detail-ubuntu-foto2

After clicking on details, in the left panel, select the 'Default Applications'. You'll see the option to change the default app on the right panel.

System-settings-default-applications-foto3

As you can see there are only a few applications that can be changed here. You can change the default settings for the web browser, email client, for the calendar, for music, for video and photos. And other applications?

Do not worry, for the other applications you need to go to method two.

2) Right-Click Menu

If you've used Windows should be at the current option ' open with ' that allows you just to open a file with a program of your choice in the list of eligible candidates. There is also something very similar in Ubuntu.

Double click the file type for which you want to change the application that opens it by default and open " property " or " properties ":

right-click-menu-1

Then go in the submenu 'Open with' to select the application to use by default:

right-click-menu-2

Done! All in all the procedure is simple or not?

I hope that the procedure will be proved useful, if you have doubts or questions you can leave a comment in the box below!
