Xubuntu: optimal configuration of the system and everything you need

Usually I like to talk and deal with topics related to Linux, one of my great passions, and focus my attention more to Ubuntu and its derivatives. After the choice (for many unhappy) by Canonical to adopt Unity as default desktop environment in Ubuntu 11.04, many users have started to look around just to try something different.

A good choice, shared by most users, is to give confidence to Xubuntu. Xubuntu is an operating system, especially suitable for laptop and desktop, using XFCE as the default environment. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work, Xubuntu contains all the applications you need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Here are the applications that you (can) install via Synaptic:
  • amule - ed2k client (like emule)
  • audacity - audio editor
  • chromium-browser - Chromium web browser
  • dvdrip - Convert DVD to various formats
  • flashplugin-installer - Flash plugin
  • gdebi - Package manager .deb
  • gimp - graphic editor
  • gstreamer (And all the gstreamer packages starting) - multimedia framework
  • gtkpod - Synchronization software for iPod
  • Gwibber - Microblogging client (facebook, twitter etc..)
  • k3b - Burning software
  • LibreOffice - Office suite
  • mplayer - Multifunctional media player
  • mozilla-plugin-vlc - VLC plugin for Firefox
  • OpenShot - Video editor
  • pidgin - Instant messaging client (supports, as well as MSN, Yahoo and others, even Facebook)
  • rhythmbox - Media player and manager galleries
  • Shotwell - Photos operator
  • transmission - BitTorrent client
  • ttf-installer-mscorefonts - Microsoft True Type fonts
  • ubuntu-restricted-extras - Third-party software not included in the Ubuntu License
  • virtualbox-ose - Virtual Machine Manager
  • vlc (and all packages starting with vlc) - Media player
Here instead of the instructions to import the Medibuntu repository and install all its codecs:
sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
Now, if you are 32bit users enter:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 non-free-codecs w32codecs
If you are a 64bit user type:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 non-free-codecs w64codecs
